I have been going here for 13 years and still don’t know if Fat Tommy is a real person. Always a great experience when at The Cookhouse. Everything is made from scratch right in the kitchen. Whether a date night, birthday celebration, or big group of people The Cookhouse is always a hit. Still a great value after all these years. The menu changes every so often, you will never run out of great options. Wednesdays are all you can eat night. Go hungry and you will not be disappointed. Great staff, full bar, and catering available.

I’ve been coming to the Cookhouse for over 10 years and it has never disappointed. They make some of the best BBQ in Connecticut and if you drive by it you’ve made a mistake. The barn-like atmosphere is super comfortable and perfect for what is being served up. We had the special Poutine appetizer and it was amazing. Hoping it gets added to the regular menu.

The service was awesome. The prime rib tender and cooked exactly as ordered. The smoked wings were tasty and not too greasy. The brisket was dry sadly but had good flavor. They accommodated my dietary restrictions as well. Atmosphere was cozy and the oversized booths great. Do not order hot water or tea ….. our waitress tried desperately to get the dish towel flavor out to no avail. The coffee machine needs to be flushed and re-tubed I believe.

We’ve been spoiled recently by some really good barbecue and smoked foods, so it was with great anticipation that we stopped (finally, after two years) at the Cookhouse in New Milford. It was a slow Tuesday, and it seemed like a good time to dive into a few platters of assorted meats. The first thing I noticed going in, was the lack of aroma — that typical smokehouse “welcome” that crawls up one nostril and down the other to let you know a terrific eating experience awaits. They were out of fried pickles, a personal favorite and a dish we try throughout New England and beyond, so the plan fell apart quickly. After a second and third review of the menu, we arrived at a few dishes and an appetizer to give us a sampling of the restaurant’s qualities. Aside from the smoked chicken (tender, juicy, good flavor) the highlight of the meal was the appetizer — the Cookhouse’s Corn Pops. They were as described on the menu and the sauce on the side was a perfect compliment to the sweet crunchy fried bits. Half hush-puppy, half creamed corn, and all good, these golden little nuggets began the meal on the right foot. It set us up for a bit of a disappointment for the main course, though. The ribs were dry and flavorless, and I had to choke down the meat with a lot of extra dipping sauce and iced tea. The pulled pork, while juicy and tender, was also lacking in any real smokehouse or barbecue flavor. Again, I was thankful for the bottle of hot sauce on the table. My side of dirty rice was bland and the Cole slaw that the waitstaff described as half mayo and half vinegar tasted of neither…in fact, it really had no flavor at all. On the other side of the table, the smoked chicken platter was nicely presented with a half chicken that was cooked perfectly with a seasoning rub on the skin that again, was really lacking in BOOM smokehouse flavor. The side of glazed carrots (the daily special) was basically a boiled carrot that had not seen a glaze in days. Though the servings were plentiful and the value good, we can’t help but wonder where the barbecue spirit was? A typical smokehouse or barbecue experience is about the bold, slap you in the face with a sticky hand-flavors…and the Cookhouse seemed to have washed its hands of any flavorful stickiness. The staff was friendly and inviting, and our waitress paid attention to us when we were the only table, but then we watched her visit four other new tables without stopping to see us twice. We had to flag a busser for to-go dishes, and left with our leftovers to season at home.

Entering The Cookhouse, and seeing all the framed magazine covers over the years that pronounced them the best barbecue in the state, we had high expectations. They were just opening before noon, so maybe this was a factor as to why the meal did not excel. Maybe we shouldn’t have ordered dinner during lunch time. Regardless, the chili, which is highly regarded on their menu, was good, but tepid. If it was served hot it would have been satisfying. I ordered the large prime rib medium rare and more on the rare side. Our waiter came to the table to tell me the cook thought I should know he could only serve me medium prime rib at this time. He was cooking a new one for tonight that would have rare portions, but that would not be available for hours.

First time here and ordered nachos and sandwiches. The nachos were so huge, we barely touched our sandwiches. Everything was hot and tasted fresh. We live an hour away and will go back again.
