Sushi of Gari is sadly now stuck in my mind as the picture of sad, soggy sushi. This location is pick up only, and I wouldn’t recommend.

Sushi from NYC’s old school sushiya, Sushi of Gari. It once it held a one Michelin star but not anymore to my knowledge. It is definitely one of the restaurants that started the sushi culture in the early 1990s for New Yorkers and still keeps its class to some level. For sushi perhaps, I have had better looking ones, however, the full umami flavor from its aged fresh fish was another level. You can copy the look, but the flavor was unique and this place had that depth. Of course out of their own pride or dignity, they are too cool to offer miso soup or a maki along with the nigiri. Nonetheless, I think you still need to try it at least once. I personally found their sautéd tomato garnish over the salmon nigiri very interesting. It was such a surprise how much umami flavor came out from pairing the salmon and tomato. Also, the funniest part is that the $140 sushi omakase comes with fresh wasabi, but the $40 something chirashi comes with cheap soulless dry wasabi lol…you definitely get what you pay for here….or a bit less.

This isn’t a very big place. We sat at the bar. One of the things I noticed was that the sushi chefs were prepping a lot of sushi orders for delivery.

By far one of the best high-end sushi restaurants in NYC. It’s always crowded so be sure to call and get a reservation. I rave about this spot all the time. The omakase is worth it. Best spicy tuna rolls in manhattan. They have some gourmet items like truffle and quail egg sushi and stewed tomato’s on salmon. Their salmon sashimi is also marinated so well. The toro is unbelievable. Who knew sushi can be so good. This is a must for any sushi lover. It’s crowded every day of the week because it is so good. They have a nice Japanese beer and saki selection as well. As for taste, this is top notch. I try to go as often as possible.

Good selection of sushi! Omakase was tasty! It does get really busy so try and get a booking otherwise you might have to wait for a table!

The pinicle of new age NYC sushi. If it’s worth the price is a personal call but it’s as good as Ginza Yasuda and above Tonashi Nakazawa or even Brushstrook.

I went here on recommendation and I’m so glad I did. I know they are better places but this is a nice mid-range sushi restaurant. The fish was so fresh and the cuts of fish were out of this world!

Nice little place for some good sushi. Wasn’t a big fan of the tofu sauce or the foie gras

Not as good as seki and more expensive (if you can believe it). The place is also the size of a matchbox. Fresh fish but nothing exciting. Feels like a take out sushi atmosphere.
