All the bad reviews are about the spiciness of the food. Guess what? You can’t have genuine Indian food without having your westerners’s palate submitted to level of spiciness you’re not used to. And this food is genuine. So ask the (wonderful, super knowledgeable and friendly) staff to walk you through the menu or help you overcome a far-too-hot-for-me dish you thought you would eat with no sweat on your forehead. We ordered the two medium dishes that are the hottest on the menu and they did burn our taste buds. We should have eaten the bone marrow first because the spicy goat liver was super delicious yet f*****g hot. Just a little rose lassi and the fire ceased in no time. Cocktails? Yeah…. These were great too. A 5 out of 5 experience.

Finally tried the place touted to serve authentic Kolkata cuisine! We had made reservations, reached 1 hour early and were promptly seated. The marigold flowers as decor give a very pujo pandal vibes. The place looked small with limited seating. We were a party of 3 and a friendly staff walked us through the menu advising exactly the right amount of food. We tried their bhetki paturi, morog boti, enchorer kalia, luchi, bhat and bhapa doi. Food was spectacular. The correct amount of spices with no overpowering flavor and you can taste every flavor distinctly. The fish was succulent and the mustard cooked to perfection. Morog boti was the perfect blend of marination and mustard oil flavor. In fact all the dishes ordered seemed to be cooked in mustard oil which pleased the bengali soul in me. Enchorer kalia was more tangy than expected and more of gravy and less jackfruit, but overall no complains. The luchis were fried to perfection and fluffy, correct size and flavor. Bhapa doi was super. Would have rated this place a solid 5 for food, but the price of the items compared to the quantity served seemed to be quite expensive. Even the menu can use some more veg items like ‘shukto’ or more rice items because even for a Bengali I was running out of choices. Would definitely recommend this place for somebody who is looking for good Kolkata style Bengali food.

We visited this place for dinner. We enjoyed atmosphere, service and unique Bengali dishes! Service is excellent! It is truly authentic and not your regular place to eat. Be ready to spend money. It worth it!

Cocktails were good, sabudhana vada was delicious. Everything else was over-spiced and the only flavor we got from the dishes was of cardamon. I love spicy food, but this was a huge let down because everything was completely masked by cardamon. Dishes were also very very greasy and the gravies were floating in oil. See photo of the green jackfruit curry that we had taken to-go.

Impeccable service, great vibes, with music at just the right volume for a warm friendly family meal. The staff could not be friendlier. Everyone was so lovely and they were very accommodating to group that included a small child. They even gave a free kiddie cup of rose milk!

They have authentic Bengali food. We tried Biyebarir fish fry, macher dim, daab chingri, and ripon street majja. The fish fry, macher dim and chingri were very good! However, we didn’t like the majja. The food is expensive here! We made the reservation for our dinner few weeks before.

Masalawala and Sons was hands down the best restaurant I’ve ever been to in NYC, and I have lived here for almost 10 years so that’s saying something!

We had a wonderful meal at Masalawala & Sons. I’m surprised to see a lot of negative reviews, because everything we had was delicious and our cocktails were great too. Our server was excellent too. Some of the dishes are spicy, but not all are. I would recommend that the restaurant put a spice level on the menu for each dish, so people are aware. Overall, we had a great experience and will definitely come back!
