I was so surprised when my wife picked Max’s in Gloucester. I seriously haven’t been there in decades. For starters John the bartender was a real good guy, knowledgeable and accommodating. Next, the food was tremendous – the spicy mussels, stuffed meatballs, clams casino and the Chilean sea bass. But we decided that our server, Daisy was the highlight of our night. She was bubbly, polite and very attentive. (Plus she is a Paul VI graduate). And the best part was she insisted that we got dessert and surprised us by singing happy birthday too my wife. I highly recommend going to Max’s Seafood Cafe and ask for Daisy!!!

Wonderful city atmosphere. Acoustic music was perfect to accompany a night out with my mother and my wife. Server was attentive and friendly. My mothers lobster ravioli was excellent with a little zing in the sauce. I had the mixed grill which was “fine” at the $39 but would have been GREAT at maybe $30-32. Wife had the chicken parmigiana and she loved the pasta and the sauce. Was amazing. The chicken slightly over done. Overall well worth the money and again, the atmosphere and great service were much appreciated.

We came here because I’ve read so many good reviews about their mussels. My husband said they were excellent in the white sauce. He also had a half dozen oysters which he really enjoyed. We will probably go back for buck a shuck night on Wednesdays.

So glad my wife picked this little gem! What a wonderful experience we had celebrating my father in-laws birthday dinner here this past Sunday. The owner went above and beyond for us and even had his pastry chef make an amazing strawberry shortcake for dessert. The drinks by John were amazing and his own twists on the drinks were on point! Best Gin and tonic as dad put it. Our waitress was attentive and happy. The entrées were delicious and fresh. The mussels were hands down the best we ever had. This was our first experience dining here and can’t say enough wonderful things about the place. Looking forward to coming back and thank you for making our dinner experience one to remember!

Max’s use to be the go to for great mussels.. But it’s not even good. The mussels and linguine are tasteless.. There is more water in the red sauce than anything else. Some of the mussels were so tiny I was afraid to eat them. I ordered oysters they too were a disappointment. Three out of the six I ordered barely had any meat. No horseradish and the mignonette was nothing but cheap red vinegar.. Sad because this was my place and I recommend it to everyone that wanted great mussels in red.. But it’s not the same .. $100 bucks for a lousy meal that the chef and the owner gave me…I’ll find somewhere else to spend my money..

Awful customer service!!! My party ordered 3 lobster rolls at $37 a per at 7pm on 5/21/2023. After receiving our appetizers the waitress explained that due to their inventory they would have to charge us each for a whole lobster at $45 per roll. We agree and confirmed that we would get a full lobster of meat on the roll. One order did get a full lobster of meat but the other 2 orders didn’t. The manager never acknowledged the issue but agreed to change the original price (they changed all of us $47) for 1 roll and offer desert which none of us wanted.
