I got the fried chicken and it was cold on the inside. So I went back and they were kind enough to refry another batch. But they served it to me burnt. I tried to eat around the burnt parts but ended up throwing out the meal.

Went to explore at the newly opened Pier57 and decided to try the karage chicken at Bessou. It’s not your regular size karage but more like chicken strips. The chicken was underwhelming and lacked any seasoning or taste. You have to use the sauces (5 to pick from) for any flavor. Sadly, I would not be getting it again. It’s not karage. It’s basically tasteless chicken strips with dipping sauce.

Price is $18 total for two sushi or sashimi pieces (they call it sashimi but serve it on rice). It’s neither expensive or cheap, it’s Pier 57 price. Food was FRESH, but just not my thing; I’d rather have had plain sushi instead. Crispy rice was annoying because it’s like rice trying to be hash browns, except harder and gets more stuck to your teeth because it’s rice based.

Chicken was freshly fried and crispy. The wasabi sauce was spicy, but the chicken by itself didn’t have much flavor.

Maybe we need to come back for their other things on the menu to recalibrate our experience. The salmon crispy rice was $8 for each piece and the rice was not very crunchy – very prone to being stuck in teeth.

Got the Bessou Chicken Club. Every ingredient in it was spectacular. Buttery scallion roll, smoked crispy bacon, creamy slaw, pickled daikon, and crispy moist karaage

The hot honey chicken nanban was disappointing. The chicken was cold, the bun was overly dense and not toasted, and the hot honey and jalapeños did not work with this specific sandwich.

I have visited Bessou multiple times and each time they WIN! During brunch their Banana Hotcakes and the Salmon Japanese breakfast are our FAVORITES – very savory, healthy portions meant to be shared and the hotcakes are like a great dessert. During dinner our go to are the Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna/Salmon, Chicken Karaage, Deviled Eggs, the Blistered Greens and Shishitos are a great vegan option. It is not your traditional Japanese restaurant (NO California rolls) – more like Japanese comfort food.
