What a fabulous find in North Jersey! Located in Closter, the name of the establishment is derived from the word Schraalenberg, meaning barren mountain or hill during Dutch times. The owner, Ben Pollinger, who won a Michelin star in New York back in 2006, finally opens his own restaurant—in his home county. Formerly on the site that housed Harvest, this restaurant is our first timer and describes itself as an attractive contemporary rustic farmhouse. From the minute one parks in their private parking lot and walks up to their gorgeous enclosed patio designed for outdoor dining, you will know you made the right choice! It was easy to get a reservation via Open Table, but they asked for a $25 per person deposit in case of no show. Upon entering yesterday, my partner, our friends and I were greeted by the host and whisked to our table in the main dining room. It’s one of the rooms with plush blue chairs, striking light wood floors, a glorious cathedral ceiling, and a stunning stone fireplace. They also have a lounge area for additional dining with a bar and a private room upstairs on the next floor. Our server was Chelsea, who took care of all our requests and promptly brought complimentary focaccia bread with olive oil to start our meal. It was so good, we had to ask for seconds. The menu was limited and always changing. For starters, we decided on today’s special: Turkish Style Falafel (hummus, pickled red onion, arugula), Salmon Tartare (ponzu, sesame, avocado), and Sautéed Shrimp & Crispy Polenta Cakes (smoked gouda, pickled fresno chili, garlic). For the main meal, we opted for Today’s Special: Moroccan Style Wild Boar Tagine (chorizo, figs, almonds, cilantro, lime yogurt), Short Rib Mac N’ Cheese (tillamook cheddar, smoked gouda, herb bread crumbs), Slow Cooked Halibut (cherry tomato-chili-herb vinaigrette, wilted spinach), Roast Duck Breast (sauteed sweet and sour peppers, mandarin orange gastrique, israeli couscous), and Organic Green (cherry tomatoes, cucumber, carrots, sherry vinaigrette). We even found a spot for dessert to share and got Chocolate Strawberry Cake (moist chocolate cake, strawberry ganache filling, milk chocolate crunchies) and Chocolate Mousse (strawberries, vanilla whipped cream). The food was cooked with fresh ingredients and was tasty and delicious. One suggestion to the Mac N’Cheese and wild boar would be to reduce a notch on the pepper. The staff is very personable. A little on the expensive side, but still great food. We can’t wait for a repeat performance, and we can recommend it.

OVERPRICED! The setting is beautiful. Plenty of room at the bar. Such a shame the food is sooo pricey and was okay at best. The tiny crab cake pictured was $20. The calamari was also a small portion and not great, the fries were okay. So disappointed.

Beautiful and spacious place. The Host sat us right away. There was a band playing oldies by a large bar, music could be heard in the whole restaurant. Our waitress was Maya, very sweet, attentive and accommodating. We ordered a bottle of wine, bottled water and she brought us bread. We ordered the organic arugula salad with Asian Apples, avocado and cheese, delicious and fresh. The ceviche was fresh, delicate flavors and beautifully presented. For our main course, seared, everything Tuna with bak choy and mushrooms. We also ordered grouper over a bed of lentils. Both entrees were cooked to perfectly, generous portions and quite tasty. We shared dessert, cinnamon crusted cheesecake with dulce de leche, very delicate, tasty and not too sweet plus Colombian coffee. We definitely had a wonderful dinner experience and will be back.

We enjoyed our meal food was good, just the seating is very cramped especially towards the front of the restaurant. It felt like I was eating in nyc and we were hearing everyone else’s conversation.

Very nice and cozy place to have a romantic dinner. Good choice for our anniversary dinner. Staff are amazing, polite and courteous. Food is amazingly delicious and presented beautifully as well as their cocktails! And lastly, they offered dessert and coffee by the end of our dinner. I will definitely go back and recommend this place to any of my friends!

Had a wonderful time at The Hill. The staff are courteous, friendly and attentive. Ricky was our server and he was accomodating and took care of all our requests promptly. The food was delicious from first course to dessert. The manager, Frank made sure to check in with our table multiple times. The restaurant decor is very pretty and perfect for the season. Would highly recommend.

Great chef and great service! Their chefs improves their menu periodically. Waiters and courteous and friendly. Recommend soft shell crab and salmon dish. Asparagus side dish was good too. The Foods was on the salter side, but in general everything was delicious and beautiful.
