I’ve been a fan of Koi Palace for many years and considered it the best dim sum in the bay area. However, this was the first time I tried Koi Palace Contempo. From the decor & menu, it seems like a modern & upscale version so I expected the service to be on par with the vibe and was disappointed that it was not better than their usual dim sum service in other locations.

We came here on a Sunday right when they open at 10 and there was no wait for a table of 6. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and the chairs, dishware, etc are nice. Service was friendly but they forgot our drinks and didn’t tell us one of the dishes we ordered was out until we asked.

Dimsum such a modern twist. They have most of the traditional dim sum options but they try to elevate it (abalone on shumai?). Their egg white dried scallop fried rice was good but overall, it was average.

Rate it about 3.5 ⭐️. It’s more like a fine dining experience for dim sum, compared to other more traditional restaurants. Which means you paid more for the environment and services, not the tastes. The service was absolutely fantastic, top notch. Some of the food was delicious too, I like the chef special eggplant the most. While the xiaolongbao dishes wasn’t perfect at all, it came out too hot, like you steamed/microwaved it too long. It’s skin was also sticked to the container firmly, makes you hard to enjoy the soup inside it. Also the picture on its screen was just weird, hard to relate to a dim sum restaurant.

Every single dish was very tasty. Definitely get the: Scallion pan cake (super interesting – this is not like your ordinary scallion pancake), 5 Flavor Chinese Soup Dumpling (we ordered two, and played a game where the winner goes first to choose the dumpling flavor they wanted to try), and Coffee Ribs (it’s definitely an interesting try because the ribs do taste like they’ve been smothered in mocha sauce). We ordered more but these definitely jump out when I try to remember the experience!

The taste was okay but didn’t blow my mind especially given the price. I felt the design was nice though (eg the taro swans, paint pallette plates, solid XLB sauce gastronomy). I saw the table next to us ordered the dungeness crab which was huge and smelled super good, but my sister and I didn’t feel like peeling the shell. Maybe next time. We ordered quite a few different dishes. Out of them I thought the squid and pumpkin salted egg, typhoon prawn dumpling, unagi rice, and taro swans were more stand out. I probably wouldn’t mind ordering the lobster or regular har gow and shiu mai again, but they were not very stand out. I don’t think I’d order the corn again though, it wasn’t bad but it didn’t taste like corn enough for me. We also ordered the Peking duck which was good with the vegetables, wrap, and sauce, but the meat was a bit dry by itself.

Food was just so so but not worth the price. The ingredients they used was not fresh enough. Compared to other dim sum restaurants, this restaurant has nothing well. They also charged a 4% wellness fee. I would never go back to to this place.
