Considered the oldest family name in Chicago pizza, Lou Malnati’s is as rich in history as its pizza is in flavor. Lou Malnati got his start in the 1940’s working in Chicago’s first deep dish pizzeria. He took his pizza expertise to Lincolnwood, a northern suburb of Chicago, where he and his wife Jean opened the first Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria on March 17, 1971. Lou was known for his fun-loving character as well as making Chicago’s best pizza. Loyal patrons lined the streets on opening day for a taste of his delicious deep dish creations. Lou always thought it was funny that an Italian should open a pizzeria in a Jewish neighborhood on an Irish holiday.

I was hoping for so much more. I was very disappointed in the pizza that I got I got an extra large pepperoni black olives and green peppers thin crust. It had no flavor in the sauce. I believe a little bit overcooked on top. I was hoping we would have a pizza that was like Casanova Brothers Pizza which I know is more of a New York style and I know Lou Malnati’s is Chicago Style but there was no flavor in the pizza that we purchased here. I will not be going back. Also I thought it was a little too expensive I know everything is gone up but three toppings for $40 for an extra large seemed a little expensive. If the flavor was there I probably would go back even at that cost.

Nothing special. Average at best. The cheese and sauce are excellent. I ordered a pepperoni and there was way too much pepperoni. The crust is tasteless, bland, and nothing to celebrate. Beware: if you pick up your pizza like I did, you cannot sit in a slightly inclined seat. I had the pizza sit on my passenger seat at a slight angle and everything slid to one side. I’ve never experienced a pizza slide to one side like this! I did not factor this into my review as this mistake was on me. I’ll try this place again in a month or so. Maybe it was an off day for flavor.

I had high expectations when I tried this pizza especially with a $30 price tag for a personal size pizza (smallest one they have). It was a sausage with jalapenos on gluten free crust. The sauce and cheese was good but the crust was undercooked. For the price i expected something more gourmet and cooked to precision. I’ve had much better personal size pizza at sit down restaurants and still not paid as much as this place. I wouldn’t recommend it.

Update: 12/12/2022 ~ Returned to give this Lou Malnati’s another try. The pizza came out better than my last experience. The pros were the pizza being cooked to my liking; great service – especially by Chris who took my call and placed my order; and the salad being exceptional as always. The cons were – maybe my fault if I wasn’t clear – the sausage in huge pieces instead of broken up; and not a lot of cheese. It was amusing as I pulled up to pickup my order… Chris came out and asked if I was Diane? We shared a good laugh as clearly I’m a guy, and I wasn’t parked in Curbside Pickup. I had a slight wait as I arrived early. So there was a slight wait that I did not mind. In the meantime, Chris couldn’t find my in-store credit that should have been under my name and number. Regardless, he gave me no hassle and applied the credit. All went very well, and I am pleased with the service and food. My apologies for not returning sooner. If ever I’m in the area I will consider ordering from this Lou Malnati’s for lunch or dinner. Thank you; and a special thanks to Chris.

So…. I’m going to chock it up to being a new location. The pizza…was great. The ingredients were awesome, the crust was perfect, the cheese was super stringy. However, I ordered 1hr ahead for pickup for a party. I arrived on time and only had to wait 5 minutes in parking spot after check in to get my pizza. I had a 3 mile commute and when I opened the deep dish pizza, it was disheveled. There was so much water (assuming from the tomatoes) that had leaked out into to the box. The pizza was just warm, not piping hot. The cheese pizza was great just colder than expected. I will definitely try it again cause the pizza was good but would much rather enjoy it straight from the oven. Hopefully they will iron out some of the ruff spot before I return.

If you’ve never had Chicago style deep dish, come here with an open mind. I’ve never tried the gluten free crust from here, so those who left the 1 star reviews here about the gluten free…they don’t speak for the regular deep dish crust!!

Pizza is exceptional! The deep dish is absolutely fantastic. It is expensive, and the pickup is a bit unorganized. Ordered about 5 HOURS ahead for 5:30 PU. Arrived at about 5:30-5:35 and didn’t leave with them until about 5:55-6:00. I understand it’s a busy time(dinner), but that’s why we ordered so far in advance. The food was at least hot, but it should have been ready, if not almost ready when we arrived. The 20-25min wait was the frustrating part. Still worth it and will definitely be back!

After tasting and enjoying their “Chicago Deep Dish” samplers at an event last week, I decided to patronize their shop. What a disappointment. FIRST COMPLAINT: I came in at 7:20 p.m. to order their special, “BBQ-Lou-Za” BBQ Chicken Pizza. I added basil leaves and selected the “deep dish” option. I left at 7:30 after being told that it would take 30 minutes. I returned at 8:00-sharp and had to wait another 10 minutes. Not very punctual. SECOND COMPLAINT: The employee asked if I wanted the pizza cut into slices and said that would be fine as I don’t have a pizza cutter. When I got home, the pizza was not cut all the way. I had to use my own knife to cut it into slices. Not very efficient. ThIRD COMPLAINT: The pizza was smothered with the overpowering and much too sweet BBQ sauce. Did I order BBQ Sauce or did I order BBQ Chicken? Which leads me to the FOURTH COMPLAINT: Where was the chicken? There were just a tiny sprinkling of chicken bits throughout the pizza. Which leads me to the FIFTH COMPLAINT: Where’s the cheese? Like the chicken, only a sprinkling of cheddar cheese. SIXTH COMPLAINT: “Deep Dish?” This was the shallowest deep dish pizza I’ve ever had. And, the kicker – SEVENTH COMPLAINT – the pizza was over-baked. The entire crust was hard as a rock which was the obvious result of over-baking (and, it was tasteless). BOTTOM LINE: This is the worst pizza I’ve ever had in my life. I’ve had deep dish pizzas in Chicago, NYC, Boston and countless other cities – this is bar-none the worst. What a disappointment. Please note that I didn’t mention anything about the “deer in the headlights” (clueless) employees either. That’s for another story at a later time.

Lived in Chicago and am a big fan of Lou Malnati’s but this place is a big disappointment. Do yourselves a big favor and drive up to the sit-down Lou Malnati’s in Phoenix !
