Jo’s Modern Thai founder and Oakland-native, Kao Saelee, is so excited to welcome you to his restaurant! He has spent the past 16 years working with his family at the popular Berkeley restaurant, Racha café, and Jo’s Modern Thai is his debut into the food scene.
Jo’s Modern Thai is inspired by Kao introducing Thai food to his wife, Jo, to Thai cuisine. At Jo’s, we offer an engaging and lively spot for Oakland natives and Bay Area residents to enjoy together in the Laurel district.
Kao hopes that through the incorporation of familiar local ingredients, guests will be able to confidently order any dish on the menu and enjoy the taste of Thailand.

My last stop on the 2023 Oakland Burger Tour and what a wonderful note to end this adventure on. I thought I would save the most unique for last and I am so impressed.

Amazing take on Thai food by this chef. If the Pineapple Rice is on the menu, order as soon as you arrive as it sells out. Other inventive offerings…order for the table so you can experience the variety. Lovely waitstaff, attentive but not overbearing. Back garden (covered, well heated with standing heaters) is comfortable but a bit tight and can be somewhat loud however, overlook it all to savor a wonderful meal!

Amazing food fairly priced, especially for the quality. Inventive tasty cocktails. Beautiful space. Great service and ambiance.

The food was amazing from appetizers to dessert. All the dishes were well balanced, flavorful and filling. The restaurant is very accommodating for vegetarians, with most items on the menu coming with a vegetarian option While definitely on the more expensive side for Thai food, you get what you pay for in quality and a great dining experience.

We (4) were excited to try but ended up disappointed. We dined on a Thursday night at about 80% full. First it can get rather loud with hard floors, walls and ceiling echoing conversations so it would be difficult to have a conversation if you had a table for 6.

Outstanding food. The atmosphere can be a bit noisy. But the cocktails and entrees are absolutely delicious.

Let me start by saying that I was a server and bartender in fine dining restaurants (some far more upscale (think crummer time and some on par with Jo’s which is downscale pricey) for 12 years in the 90s and early 2000s and have worked in the service industry for 37 years now.

Honestly one of my favorite resturants of all time. Such unqiue and delicious flavors! Atmosphere and environment is chic. I’d highly recommend the catfish salad and pork belly curry.

Incredible food, cocktails, and mocktails. I could eat the Coconut Cakes over and over again. The pork belly curry has just the right heat and is delicious. Several gluten free options as well. Jo’s is a must visit of the Easy Bay.

Good food overall, but was underwhelmed a bit. I was probably expecting much more given the hype. Though you won’t be disappointed, but one can get comparable Thai at fairly more reasonable price points. Service was good. But indoors were loud! Probably the patio might be a better bet. We had Drunken noodles (meat was high quality, noodles were decent) and massamen (good, but could have been a bit richer in flavor).
