This restaurant is a treasure trove of fine food and hospitality. I had the shrimp and grits. Perfect-tasted like we were in Charleston, SC. Perfectly done. Lisa and Jay the owners and chef are models of hospitality and the most welcoming of hosts. They have an excellent menu of many fine dishes. The restaurant is comfortably appointed, inside and out, with a cozy and welcoming atmosphere that pairs perfectly with the cuisine. Highly recommended!

I’m from Oregon and have been visiting my sister in May’s Lick for nearly a month. I have eaten in many restaurants during my annual visits and OBF has the absolutely most delicious food, and friendly, personable, yet professional owners and staff. I have never cared for fried green tomatoes until I ate them at OBF! Everything I have ordered has been not only delicious but beautifully presented as well. I will miss the kind people, the awesome food and the quaintness of this place when I go back home in a few days.

My friends and I were on a road trip from WA to NC and stopped to eat at numerous restaurants. None stand out like OBF Kitchen.

Disappointed. I was so excited to try this place. It had been recommended to me by a coworker and, after reading the rave reviews on Facebook, I convinced my husband to make the 45 minute drive to Mayslick for our date night. When we arrived, the place was packed. Every table in the place full and several people waiting for carry out. We got a table quickly and had prompt service. The bread was great. Decent beer selection. After mulling over the menu-there were many things I wanted to try- I finally decided on the ribeye, cooked medium, with the succotash and bacon Brussels. I decided I would save the shrimp and grits, beer cheese burger, and French onion soup for our subsequent visits. My husband ordered the bison meatloaf, smashed red potatoes and gravy, and green beans. We ordered, and waited. And waited. And watched everyone else in the place wait as well. People waiting for to go orders stood at the counter for at least 30 minutes. Finally I see the waitress heading our way with 2 plates. She tries to set down two sirloins with mashed potatoes and broccoli, and we politely tell her that it is not our order. She turns to return to the kitchen and another table tells her it’s their food, but she needs to go to the kitchen first to confirm. She returns and drops the food off to the people who told her it was their food. We continue to wait. Finally, our food is brought out. In front of us sets two plates of what resembles hospital cafeteria food, in my humble opinion. That’s okay, I can overlook appearances. However, upon cutting into my cold steak, I find that it is not medium. It is well, or maybe even extra well. Disappointed, I turn to my Brussels sprouts, which are also cold, except for the ones in the middle which are still warm from the microwave. No caramelization or roasting of these guys- straight up microwave steam. The succotash, on the other hand, was delicious. My husbands “bison meatloaf” reminded me of those questionable burgers from the frozen section of the grocery. Dry and cold. Mashed potatoes were mediocre. “Green beans” were essentially Haricot Verts- not good ole southern style green beans. Husband disappointed in that but ate them anyway. Back to my steak, when our sweet waitress returns I show her the inside and she agrees that it is not medium. She takes the steak and returns to the kitchen. A few moments later, the cook comes out to our table to inform me that he “checked my steak with the meat thermometer and it was cooked medium.” He said he guesses he could make me another one if I wanted.. we sit in awkward silence for a moment before he returns to the kitchen. About 10 minutes later our waitress comes out with another steak. This one was actually hot. However, it was even more done than the previous steak. I told the waitress that at this point we would gladly pay for the sides and my husbands meal but we were ready to leave. She ended up taking all our food off the bill- which she didn’t need to do, and we didn’t ask her to do-my husband ate most of his and we would have absolutely paid for it. We weren’t trying to get free food. We just wanted the good food we had expected. Maybe this was just a fluke but I noticed other people tonight sending food back, waiting long time periods, and just seeming unhappy with their experience. We may come back, we may not. I just wanted to share my experience so others don’t plan their destination date night to a total let down.
