Stissing House Menu – Pine Plains, NY

Type : American restaurant

Location : Pine Plains, NY

Stissing House is one of the oldest taverns in America, located at the crossroads of the village of Pine Plains in the heart of Dutchess County. It has hosted feasts for generations. Downstairs, intimate dining rooms and fireside lounges are ideal for parties of 8-10 people. Upstairs, the oldest Dutch Colonial ballroom in America is designed for long-table dinners and weddings of 25-150 people. Gather your friends and family for pitchers of shandy and wood fired eggs the day before or morning after your party. Chef/Proprietor Clare de Boer cooks food that is generous and has a sense of place. Ingredients come from surrounding farms and are prepared on the tavern’s mammoth hearth. The eggs are laid today, and the food is made for feasting.

This is culinary level food at very high prices as one might expect. Check the menu before you go to insure there is something you’re willing to try. On the plus side, the service is incredible. Their bread is also delicious and their butter tastes like they whipped it up that morning. I also had a rather unusual salad with different fruits and lettuces in it that all came together very nicely. I also had roasted chicken with rosemary potatoes (I am NOT an adventurous eater). The chicken was plump and juicy and cooked to perfection, but it tasted like, well, roasted chicken. Nothing special. The same with the rosemary potatoes, which barely tasted different than regular potatoes. Going back to the positive, their coconut cake is out of this world delicious. The atmosphere is also very nice, restored from the early 19th century. Modern additions were very tastefully done. All in all, most of the food is rather ‘high brow’ and just not worth it to me. It’s more of an experience than a place to eat. Everything is quality, just not my cup of tea.

We’ve become regular patrons of Stissing House. We recently returned to the restaurant to try their spring menu, and once again, the entire dining experience was amazing.

I feel so bad having to give 4 stars but I just couldn’t give 5 with a tasteless chicken noodle soup. My family went to brunch and my young son and I ordered the chicken noodle soup… after asking for some salt to add to the soup, it was still tasteless. I was so disappointed since I felt like the chicken could’ve at least had more flavor.

Terrific new American food using locally sourced ingredients; loved my wild mushrooms. 250 year old building with great plank boards and ceiling; multiple working fireplaces and antiques. Cocktails and atmosphere. Highly recommend a visit.

An incredible evening all the way through; cocktails in the snug fireside nook with serve-yourself peanuts in the shell, followed by a wonderful meal in the dining room which has the perfect level of ambiance; a long airy room flanked by large windows and heavy wood accents together is simultaneously intimate, elegant and rustic. The service was perfect – great wine and food recommendations, a really decent wine list with some lesser known French and Italian varietals were the perfect combination to the wood fired meats. The horseradish cream with the steak was a highlight as was the riff on raspberry ripple ice cream – using fig instead. The perfect autumnal dinner.

Beautiful cozy new American restaurant with fantastic service. Loved the fresh farm to table menu. The endive and pear salad was very good. The chicken was excellent, juicy and with the crispiest skin. Squash was also deliciously spliced. We ended our meal with the toffee Sunday which was to die for. All the waiters were super friendly and attentive! Looking forward to many more meals at this delicious restaurant!

This is a gorgeous old style restaurant under new ownership. You walk into another era stepping on century old wood floors, with a glorious open kitchen, wood fired oven and a beautiful bar. The service was attentive and gracious. My rating only pertains to the brunch menu – we were there last Saturday – which is extremely limited, I maybe recall 6 items, very focused on eggs and offering an awkward chicken soup…on an 80 degree day. We are told that the dinner menu is abundant and rich in its choices and we will definitely be back
