What a nice BBQ restaurant in the heart of San Diego. I went to college in Texas and this is so far as close to Texas BBQ that you can get in San Diego. They have a location at Petco Park as well, food was great and nice area to sit and eat. They also have a bar. You order the food at the window on the side, then wait there for them to prepare your food, then sit down.

I had seriously mixed opinions about this joint. The beef rib was thick, juicy, fatty, and a must try! The spare ribs were good. The tri tip sandwhich was plain, but the meat was good. The white beans and bacon had no flavor at all. I like a more vinegary bbq sauce, and the one I tried (the sweet one) did not disappoint. They have like 4 different bbq sauces to try. The fries were ok, again not my favorite. I really enjoyed the dolewhip mimosa. The ice cream was basic, and the chocolate they use for the dipped cone is not good. The chocolate fudge in the sundae is better. Overall, I would eat here again for the beef ribs and to try some different sides.

Great food. Great service. I was really pleased with the menu options and the array of food and beer available. Sundays with the special menu was a hit.

Really tasty BBQ meats and sauce. Kid and puppy friendly. Good selection of beers, meats and sides. Kids menu was great with a good sized cheeseburger and fries.

Disappointing brisket, could barely taste any smoke. And to make matters worse I didn’t see a half pound option so I had to fight through most of a pound. The ranch life sauce and spicy slaw made it bearable at least.

We stopped here on a Friday night around 7 pm. There is no parking lot so you have to look for parking in the surrounding neighborhood. There was a short line when we arrived and it moved quickly. A lot of outdoor and some indoor seating. The outdoor seating doesn’t have any heaters so beware on chilly nights. The menu online doesn’t match what they have at the restaurant and there are more things at the restaurant. They have some starters like nachos and cheesey fries. They also have a small vegan and kids menu too. We came for the BBQ, which you buy by mass (quarter pound minimum). We tried the brisket and pork ribs with green beans and Peruvian beans as our sides. The food came out quickly and the BBQ was delicious!! The brisket was so juicy and had a lot of marbling. The bark on it was really well seasoned. The pork ribs were incredibly tender. The meat literally fell off the bone when you picked it up. Both meats were good but the brisket was my favorite. You can get different BBQ sauces on the side and some sweet pickles. I loved the pickles! The sides were great as well. I would definitely recommend coming to Grand Ole BBQ Y Asado if you are looking for amazing BBQ.

(Aug. 2022) Came for lunch after a local recommendation. I was lamenting the lack of good barbecue in town and this did not disappoint on any front. Walking in reminds me of stopping at a Texas roadside BBQ; the smell of meats slow smoking in outdoor cookers slowly pumping out the delicious vapors. The open barn feel adds to the atmosphere and hidden elements blend the cowboy style with local tourism and even some hidden Disneyland memorabilia.

As a Texan living in California now, I was sad that I wouldn’t have good bbq anymore until I found this wonderful joint. Meat selection was top tier and delicious, draft beer selection was phenomenal, and the mugs were cold! And the draft root beer float to top it all off; absolutely amazing. Don’t change anything that you do Grand Ole BBQ!

So wanted to love this place, and it does have it’s outstanding qualities. Staff is wonderful. Service is quick. Atmosphere is comfy. What hit me hard was the food – the most important measure. I got the famous fries (forget the name) with pulled pork on top. The pork was the most tender and juicy pulled pork I think I’ve ever had. But why would it have no flavor? No smoke at all. I know they didn’t boil it as there was some visible char. It’s a mystery really. The fries just killed me though. I consider myself a bit of a salt-aholic but OH-MY-DEAR-DYING-JESUS! I couldn’t even eat them. How is it possible that fries can be so salty with no visible salt? A brine, maybe? Salted oil? If the fries were edible I would have given a better rating. The food really was a 2 but the atmosphere and service brought the overall rating up to a 3. I saw many other ratings mentioning bland meat with no smoke but nothing about salty fries. So maybe this was a one off issue.
