Fabulous food! Unfortunately, I ate the food before I took pictures! I did get pictures of the drinks. Mine was a gimlet, and it was light and fruity! My husband’s boulevardier, was excellent! He’s been here three times and always orders one!

We have been fans of Ethiopian food for many years. In a town with a lot of it Abyssinian Kitchen stands out. Everything was fresh. Even collards were crisp and didn’t taste stewed. Same for all the vegetables. The lamb was tender and impeccably seasoned. The enjira was fresh, and the slight fermented bite let us know it was traditional. The mocktail was complex, not syrupy, and hit the “cocktail” button. Dessert cheesecake was dense, cheese forward and fruity rather than just sugary.

The food could have been better and cheaper. The veggie platter portions were small and the lentil dishes were quite under seasoned and under cooked. The tibs were tough not tender and also felt expensive for the size. Beet salad was just a rip off especially when you can see an old menu online where it used to cost almost half as much. $60 for these three items just didn’t feel right. Very friendly service and nice atmosphere though .

After entering we had the host take us to our table immediately. After sitting we decided to switch our table due to direct air from HVAC. The host was sweet to change the table for us. After placing our order, it took around 15 minutes for it to arrive. Hope that improves over time since they have been open only for a week. The food was amazingly delicious but the quantity was too less. We ordered the vegan platter which is $20. The quantity has reduced too much in comparison to what they were offering at their old location. Maybe it’s inflation. We also orders a side of Shiro which is one of the best thing to get. Overall our experience was good.

We ate here tonight, it was my first time eating Ethiopian food, and it was amazing!! 11/10! I had the spicy beef tartare, it was soo delicious. The hosts/servers are awesome and they have a great bartender too! Will be back!!

Located on Alberta Street in NE Portland, it’s been there since late 2022. Owner says it was formerly in SE Portland and went bust during COVID. It’s small and elegant inside, quiet and aesthetic, with a small bar, but we got take-out because we’re still Covid-shy. The food is phenomenal. This is the real deal for sure. The teff bread (traditional Ethiopian) is darker grain and slightly fermented (sourdough) and fantastic. Nothing like the low-end, heavy stuff I’ve had before. Lentils, chickpeas, cabbage, spinach– all perfection and spiced perfectly. They have beef and chicken for the carnivores. A little pricey but well worth it. This is a classy place, not a food truck. Take out containers are recyclable. A real find.

The two of us shared the lentil Sambas and the Beyaynetu, both were delicious. My understanding is that food is consumed using a small piece of “injera” to wrap around a portion of a dish to eat. Injera is a spongy flat bread made from a grain called teff. I don’t think you’re supposed to eat the wet dishes directly with your fingers. Nevertheless, wash your hands upon arrival or after ordering. The service was good, the people nice, and the setting comfortable. I only wish they had some eating instructions with a bit about Abyssinian culture on the menu. We, naturally, looked it up for ourselves on our phones.
