When we arrived at Al Vicolo, we were immediately sat, and submerged in to Italy. While many, and I mean many ignorant reviewers and customers would say that the service was slow, and the food was different in a bad way, the service was realalistic, and so was the food. When the owner of Al Vicolo brought his family to Hawai’i, he intended to bring a genuine Italian experience to customers and their families. What this is NOT is an American restaurant. All of the ingredients (except the goat cheese) are imported from Italy, and this furthers the great taste of the food. I ordered the Gnocchi, and it was easily the best I will ever have. If you would like American Italian food, with indulgent food and fancy lighting, then unfortunately, this place is not for you. However, if you would like to enjoy a new experience, and have an open mind (which I would hope is most people), then Al Vicolo is a fantastic place to spend your evening.

My husband and I ate here once for lunch and again for dinner a night later. The food is amazing, best Italian I have had outside of Italy. If you like Italian pizza and pasta this is the place to go. This restaurant is truly a gem. Our waitress Taylor was so friendly and personable she gave us a number of recommendations of things to do in the area and really made our experience 5 stars.

Probably some of the best authentic Italian pizza I’ve had anywhere – truly not to be missed! Friendly service by lovely Italian servers who are excited about their offering. Unpretentious casual but composed atmosphere. Fabulous and accessible wine list. We were on the big island for a week and had to go back a second time – don’t miss!!

One of the best Italian restaurants we have eaten at in North America! This place is a hidden gem…. we were not expecting to find a good Italian place in Hawaii, and came across this by pure chance, we went there twice! The pizza is delicious, authentic thin crust, not this thick American mumbo jumbo. The waitress Taylor was a very sweet, kind person. If this restaurant was in our city it would have a line out the door!

My family has lived part time on the island for over 10 years and have eaten at most if not all of the local restaurants. We first tried Al Vicolo shortly after they opened this past summer. Immediately we fell in love with the people and the food. Last night we enjoyed a wonderful New Years Eve dinner. All 11 of us were extremely pleased with the quick and friendly service and authentic, fresh Italian cuisine. Our server Ulana was very personable and efficient. He made us feel like home and brought us our food and drinks soon after we ordered. Even though it was New Years Eve and the restaurant was full, we were served quickly. If you are looking for a new favourite restaurant Al Vicolo should be your first choice! We’ll be back again this week and many more times in the years to come!

We went on Veteran’s Day night, and it was not crowded, so we were served right away. We had an excellent super fresh salad with wonderful olive oil dressing, which set us on a good note! We ordered a white pizza with potatoes and pine nuts which was really super and thoroughly delicious. Our entree of prawns sautéed in brandy was disappointing though, as there was very little sauce, and the prawns were not succulent. Overall a good experience, and the pizza is clearly the star of the show at Al Vicolo. We will be back!

Food here is fantastic. Truly great. I’ve eaten here twice and both meals were wonderful. They’re losing a star, because the service is very sporadic. Servers often don’t seem to know/notice if a table is being helped or not. I don’t know if they don’t have assigned sections…but the service suffers for it. Go here for the food. The pizza is authentic and delicious.

Three of us shared a delicious panzanella salad, a first-rate arugula and prosciutto pizza, and slice of excellent chocolate cake with ice cream. It was, admittedly, not an extensive sampling of the menu, but it as comparable to the best Italian restaurants on the San Francisco Peninsula. That’s high praise for a restaurant that is in little Kawaihae. Beware that the portions are large, so order accordingly.

Amazing authentic Italian food! It’s rare to find authentic Italian food outside of Italy, but this wonderful Roman family has brought it to the Big Island. They even imported their pizza oven from Italy. If you’re looking for a great Italian meal, this is the place!!!

Have to give one star but really no stars would be more accurate. We sat for 2 hours thinking that’s just how long it takes for fresh Italian cuisine. Then all the tables that were around us and came after us got their food and finished. I spoke up and finally they brought out half our meals. I still sat thinking mine was coming and nothing. Our entire party finished and the waitress never figured out I never received my meal. Food was ok taste but there are so many better places to spend your evening while on vacation on the Big Island. They just opened, so give them a little time to figure it out. Maybe a few months. We won’t be back, however.
