My sister and I wanted to celebrate our birthday with steaks! We decided to go to Alexander’s in Normal on our bday. We were super excited to learn they were open for lunch on Saturdays. We had not been there in a number of years and it looks like the dining room has not been updated in a number of years. Carpet, table, chairs were outdated. The dinning room was dimly lit and not very inviting. We were one of three tables in the entire restaurant and the service was excoriating slow. First they sat us right next to another table which was odd because the restaurant was empty. It took forever for our server to serve us for drinks, to check on us, to get us refills, to bring our appetizer, to bring our food, to check on us throughout meal, and bring us the check. It was just in a word disappointing. Our steaks were cooked to order and baked potatoes were good too. My sister and I added shrimp skewers to our filets. The shrimp were not edible and way overcooked very rubbery and impossible to eat. We did let the server know and they were taken off our bill. The dinners come with one trip to salad bar. The salad bar had some of that lettuce leaf’s that were brown in a huge bowl and we had to pick around it. The restaurant had just opened so you think someone would have removed the brown lettuce leafs before setting it out for diners. The other items on salad bar seemed fresh and tasted good. If you go on your bday you get $10 off your steak which is a good deal!! Overall, it was just an ok dining experience for the price point and lack of attentive service.

This place was not my first Alexander’s so I can say that this one didn’t seem as up scale other locations. Specifically the table clothes made the experience feel cheap. The food was good. I had the 10 oz sirloin with a loaded baked potato. The appearance was deceiving because it really was delicious yet not those most esthetically pleasing. Steak was a great texture but I thought the meat density seemed soft and I am not used to so much fat with a sirloin. The potato was decent but feel they could take a lesson from Texas Roadhouse. My mother in law had the steak kabobs and she said they were excellent.

Dan and I both ordered 10oz sirloins. Mine was to be RARE with no seasoning, and Dan’s was to be medium with Santa Maria seasoning. Needless to say, the Santa Maria steak was the RARE steak, and what would have been my RARE steak with no seasoning was WELL done. Anyone who knows me knows I eat my steaks very RARE. Angela, our server, was so apologetic and knocked off a good chunk of the bill for the steak mixup. We love the salad bar there, and typically don’t get steak. Angela made it right for us. We’ll definitely be going back. The only negative…the cook who likes to play drums with the meat tongs while cooking steaks. Maybe instead of being a drummer, he can get the steaks cooked to the requested doneness. Very annoying and disruptive when trying to relax.

our server hailey took 20 minutes to take our order for the appetizer after walking past us multiple times and was talking with coworkers and other tables. she never apologized for taking forever to get to us. when she did finally take our order she was VERY rude, condescending, and short. felt like we were just another number to her. we waited another 10 minutes for her to take our entree order. finally, after 45 we got our food it was pretty good but the horrible service kinda ruined everything. as a waitress myself, i would never treat a table with such disrespect ever.
