A wonderful, almost “hidden” spot on the lower level of a historic east village building. We were seated right away on a Wednesday night even without a reservation. The decor and plating were beautiful – something straight out of a movie. Portion size and service were also excellent. Recommend for a lux date night!

So nice to find this East Village place with authentic Japanese cuisine and chill vibes. Tables are spaced comfortably, there is soft lighting and lovely jazz playing at a comfortable volume much as you might find in a small, hip restaurant in Tokyo. We shared the kani croquettes as an appetizer, one of my favorites in Japan. I had the curry katsu with the teishoku set. My husband had the loco moco with the Teishoku set. We both left very satisfied and full. One observation, the katsu was a bit thin, perhaps a little dry as a result but the flavor was very good.

I had curry set with creamy crab croquette! The croquette was super amazing. Nicely fried and creamy inside. Curry sauce tasted a bit too plain. But the runny egg on it was a excellent touch. Great portion for a girl. Nice ambience. Not too loud for a Friday night.

We had the mentaiko pasta and the a la carte omurice. I thought the pasta was good but the portion was too big and the flavoring was a bit overwhelming. The omurice is nice, classic, very well-seasoned.

The staff are very friendly and attuned, providing quick and considerate service. The decor is also very welcoming and spacious, where you don’t ever feel like you’re on top of anyone. The curry cheese Hamburg was so delicious; creamy and meaty with a hint of smokiness! We also got the teishoku set which provided such a symphony of flavors, ranging from sweet, sour, salty, and creamy! I definitely highly recommend adding the set for 8 dollars, for the yuzu tomato was by far the SWEETEST and most delicious tomato I ever had (keep in mind that the set items may change!)

The menu is quite misleading, as the first page lunch menu has a teeny tiny line saying only serving Tuesday to Friday. And the food is not good compared to the price. The Omurice tastes weird, the soba doesn’t even look fresh and is all sticky together.

Stumbled upon AOI Kitchen while trying to find dinner around East Village on a Saturday night. We ordered truffle nori fries, which had the right amount of crisp and truffle flavor. The karage was disappointing- it was soggy and not crispy at all. The omurice was pretty good- the egg was fluffy and the demi-glace sauce was a bit sweet, but not too overpowering. Also, tried the katsu sando. The bread to katsu ratio was a bit off in my opinion. Overall, the service was great, the ambiance is cozy and definitely sets the mood.

Super pricy, around $50 per person after tax, yet their omurice is too good to pass. Gently slice the fluffy omelette lengthwise, then it will flip equally over your rice – such a healing ritual to appreciate a well-cooked omurice

Very tasty curry but a server forgot many things that I ordered. And it was only 2 tables at that time. Tonkatsu has a smell but lightly breaded. The omelette was good

I had my lunch with my friends here for lunch. The price is super reasonable for the lunch set menu and the food was delicious. Highly recommended the curry with loco moco and melon soda with matcha ice cream. A cozy warm restaurant and the service was awesome! Yoshi is really nice he always asks us if we need anything or have any questions. I’ve been here a few times during lunch time, a great place to have lunch because it’s not loud. Also super friendly/great place to eat by yourself!
