Born in Foggia, Italy, Lucio “Lou” Bozzelli co-founded with his brother, Tony, what was originally known as “Bozzelli’s Brothers Deli. Their business philosophy was simple: SERVE. GOOD. FOOD. Initially, the menu was limited to cold Italian sub sandwiches because they could not afford a grill. Through word of mouth, the only form of advertising the believed in, their business started to grow and as their budding operation improved they expanded the menu to include hot food like steak subs and pizza. Lou’s brother, Tony, continued to operate the business after Lou’s passing in 1989. To honor Lou’s legacy, his wife and children looked to the stars for inspiration–hence, the spaceman–and relaunched the shop and have now grown to five stores.

Wow I discovered this place last night and it was such a nice surprise. I LOVE the astronaut theme! The interior is so cool! And there are places to plug in your phone or laptop too . Such a delightful hidden gem located right next to the Georgetown Waterfront, with the most incredible vegan pizzas!! I dropped by with a friend for lunch on a Friday, and Bozzelli’s honestly hit all the right spots — delicious comfort food that was satisfying, but also accommodated my friend and I’s dietary restrictions and didn’t feel outrageously heavy (in the way that pizza often can); a fun and upbeat ambiance; and phenomenal service. The shop’s astronaut-themed decor was super cute and gave the shop a bit of character, although, honestly, the food was good enough to speak for itself.

Bozzelli’s is a hidden gem within D.C. The chicken parmigiana sandwich, though a bit tiny in size for the price, was extremely delicious, utilizing a soft, high-quality chicken that all blends together. The pizza was a bit lower in quality, though, consisting of cheese which tasted like Papa John’s, and thus the pizza is best as an appetizer. But because of the chicken parm, it’s an easy 5/5.

Bummed out about this place. Worst Italian sub ever. Ordered delivery, just got the sub and a smoothie, the order cost thirty dollars including delivery fees. I subbed gluten free bread for a couple bucks and what I got was a couple pieces of simultaneously soggy and hard really gross toast that fell apart when I tried to pick it up. The menu said the sub included mortadella but it arrived with zero mortadella, mostly just ham. Disappointing, I regret spending the money ordering from here

Wow! Very impressed! Excellent food, large quantity, at a great price. Winning all around! The food was so fresh. Got some pasta to go for dinner, and my pastrami sandwich for lunch was outstanding! Owner and employees are gems. I’ll be back for lunch tomorrow!
