I’ve been here a few times, and it is a hidden gem. I didn’t even know thar there was a BBQ place nearby until (Strictly Dumpling) Mike Chen had done a piece on this on YouTube. I was shook, I told my husband we had to go there this weekend to check it out.

Visited Breakwater BBQ after Mike Chen’s video and it definitely lived up to the hype! The staff was very attentive and welcoming. Food portions were generous. We enjoyed everything but the ribs were the stand out item! Can’t wait to come back and try more!

As a BBQ connoisseur, this place is the best bbq ive tried in the bay area so far. The meats were good but a little on the dry side. I just need to come right after they rest from the smoker. My cuts were from the warmer.

Tried this place for the first time and it did not disappoint. Got there a few min after they opened and there was a line of people. Didn’t really have to wait too long though. Ordered the brisket tray and added a hot link and lemonade. Had the potato salad and the chili as my sides. Brisket was juicy and delicious. The hot link was phenomenal, not too spicy and loads of flavor. The potato salad was good, kinda wish I picked the mac and cheese since I saw a lot of people ordering that. Also, their customer service was outstanding. They were super nice and always trying to help their customers. I definitely will come back and try the rest of the menu.

Wow. Fantastic BBQ. The ribs were…. well, perfect. Beautifully smoked, nice ring, didn’t fall apart but all the meat came off the bone with every bite. Chili was awesome. Burger was a great combo of beef and brisket. I got cheddar instead of American cheese. Great substitution. Smothered in cheese and crispy around the edges where it overflowed. Staff was super friendly. Highly recommended.

For the area it is good BBQ with a great atmosphere. Pretty small inside with 5 tables and a small bar. They also have a few tables outside. Slaw (an apple slaw with great flavor) and Mac-N-Cheese (has jalapeños in it) were good. Brisket was good but a little dry. From the amount of a smoke ring it had, I think it was at to high of a temp or just smoke a little to long but I am super picky over my BBQ. Ribs were good and had a great flavor. Bread was nice and thick loke Texas toast but seems like it was left out awhile. The 2 sauces were good. Red was more of a Chipotle and the green was almost like a spicy chimichurri (not that spicy though). I would eat there again.

From owning a BBQ restaurant for years it’s hard to find a good one. Somewhat picky. I am lucky enough to live a block away from this place. Today I had the breakwater burger and cornbread. When picking up I saw some smoked salmon chowder that I had to get. Also got a fish taco. It was all amazing! And the service is amazing as well. Thanks breakwater. You guys are doing great!

This place was incredibly disappointing. Service and staff were incredibly friendly, but the food was terrible. BBQ was really dry, and so was the potato salad. Combo plate where the cornbread and potato salad cost as much as the main item! Incredibly dry ribs, and potato salad lacked any type of flavor whatsoever. Sadly the soggy cornbread was probably my favorite thing from the whole meal.… and I still threw half of everything away. Didn’t care for more than three bites of the potato salad. Coffee sauce was like a spicy ketchup, very lacking in any real bbq or any other type of flavor. Carrot sauce was alright, good spice, but really like a basic brown mustard sauce. Ehhh, I was severely disappointed in the food for its price point. Cheap local beers and friendly staff though… if that’s what you’re looking for.

Take Back Roads
Really cute place, inside and outside, convenient from the PCH but far enough away that you don’t get much road noise if you sit outside. I got the brisket sandwich and Mac n cheese, and my wife got the smoked pastrami Reuben and potato salad. We ended up swapping sides though cuz we liked each other’s more than our own. The sandwiches were fantastic! The smoked meats were so flavorful and juicy. Perfect BBQ.

We ordered brisket and rib plate. Seasoned well with good smoky flavor. Both are a bit heavy for our taste, but I think most people should like it.
