Born and raised in New Orleans, living in Montana for the last 18 years, we are highly skeptical and judgmental of any restaurant in Montana that claims to serve Cajun food. Until we found Cafe Zydeco, we thought they didn’t exist. Cafe Zydeco’s gumbo, hush puppies, and beignets passed with flying colors for authentic Cajun flavor. I will say that fish doesn’t belong in seafood gumbo, but it didn’t disappoint. The shrimp was plentiful and the roux delicious. The hush puppies were the best, rivaling any that we’ve ever eaten. Overall, our party of 4 ordered the gumbo, crayfish Etouffee, shrimp po-boys, and hush puppies. Cafe Zydeco served up genuine Cajun food with friendly service at a good price. If you want some good Louisiana cooking that you don’t have to prepare yourself, give CZ a try. (Now, if only they could get “real” french bread. :))

I picked this restaurant because they had dog friendly patio seating & I knew my husband would love the food. I’m pretty picky but after talking with the wonderful server I decided on the shrimp & grits. The “gravy” was a little spicy for my taste. I had never tried grits & they were so good! The creaminess worked well with the spicer gravy & I love shrimp any way it comes. And the hush puppies were so yummy (again a “new” food for me)!

It was recommended by some friends of ours, so we stopped in for lunch. The service was great, lot’s of food on the menu. They were really good sandwiches and could only eat half of the food. Tasted great. Definitely will go back next time I am In Helena.

I ordered a simple grilled cheese for 6 dollars. You get a hoagie roll with half melted cheese. No fries, I kindly asked for a side of ranch, and the server stared at me, said nothing, and walked away. When I asked to have my grilled cheese cooked longer, they said no, they could not do that… ummm. That’s the way they cook it. “Too bad she doesn’t like it,” said the owner. Wow! Enjoy everyone, go see for yourself.

Food is wonderful. I like the portion size but the friends I went with thought the portions were light. But the flavor is great! The food came out very fast and you bust your own tables which is fine with me. Atmosphere is ok, you have a bunch of funny signs to read and laugh about.

Get poboys, ( sandwiches) . If you like Texas cooking you will love this place. Great food, very retro diner. Kids would love this place, any flavor of cream soda fountain drinks you could want. If you need something made to order, they will do it! Great family owned restaurant.
