The interior design of Chai is inspired by Siheyuan (四合院), which are buildings arranged on four sides around a courtyard and the old lanes of Beijing hutongs(胡同), giving insight into the ancient lifestyle of ordinary Beijingers. They are significant in developing and evolving the capital’s history and culture.
At Chai, we serve authentic Beijing cuisine, inheriting the cooking techniques the Qing Dynasty’s court cuisine. We present unique local Beijing dishes, including Zha Jiang Noodles, and many more, aided by a wide variety of meticulously prepared dishes.

The restaurant setting is really nice and definitely can see the owner of the restaurant have a lot of thoughts on the branding. I saw a some very enlightening drinks they created. For our visit, we ordered the restaurant week for one person and meatballs and Qianlong cabbage. The food presentation is really good. However, the taste is just average in my mind. Still recommend this place if you want to find some nice place to chill with friends.

Seriously the best food we’ve had in a long time! Great environment and delicious food makes happinesses! The service was nice from the cashier to the others, the guy who in charge of our table is from Shanghai as well, gives the best recommendations. Highly recommend a reservation or arriving early, it’s so worth it. Will be back..

Definitely my favorite place in NYC: if you love authentic Beijing-style Cuisine, this is a must-have that you don’t want to miss. In addition to the excellent food, their restaurant service is at top level as well. The restaurant manager (Sean or Shawn) will make sure you are happy with your experience, and even make an effort to bring your experience to the next level!

The environment and service are good, and the mini desserts in baby sizes. The Beijing food is not authentic, but it is not too bad. The quality is comparable to an average Chinese restaurant but with higher prices. However, it is worth mentioning that they offer a vegetarian menu. I won’t recommend and I will Never come back.

Overall a 3.5 star because of past experiences. I’ve been here three times, the most recent with 2 other friends. I’m not sure if food has gotten worse, as the past two times were better, but this time none of the dishes were worth the price. We ordered 7 dishes in total for the 3 of us, and everything was mediocre. The duck rolls were okay, crispy but not much flavor. The tofu skin with pork was flavorful, as was the zha Jiang mian, though less so than I remembered. The fish fillets were fishy and tasted like it was out of a package, and I’m not really sure what the broth added to the dish aside from the visuals. The shrimp with tofu was probably the best dish, delicate and light. The shrimp tart tart was basically shrimp in mayo, and the pork belly was surprisingly bland for something that’s braised. The decor was great though, and service was decent.

Located in midtown NYC, Chai is a Chinese restaurant that specializes in Beijing cuisine. Although I wasn’t familiar with the food, browsing the menu online convinced me to give it a try.

We ordered several dishes in Chai, and all were tasty and flavorful! But the 2 dishes we are most impressive.

One of my very favorite Chinese restaurant in Manhattan! True Beijing taste – although many of my Chinese friends do not know what true Beijing home food taste like. The comfortable setting and the fine trained chef from Beijing just make this place so special! It’s not what your think of fake Beijing duck place – but many traditional Beijing home cooking items in beautiful preparation.
