If you haven’t experienced the Charcoal House, you have a hole in your head. It’s one of the best steak houses in America. Why? It’s been around longer that anyone can remember and it hasn’t changed one stitch from the day it opened. It’s like going back to the 1950s. Brothers George and Steve are always there to make a welcoming entrance. The steaks are outstanding, the fish is excellent, the house salad perfect, the hard toast and butter with a perfectly made martini will make any day great. This is one of the most classic restaurants in the world and it’s no more than 20 minutes away from you. Go. Run!

We were a party of 4… 2 of them got the halibut special… they said it was absolutely delicious… 1 of us got the strip steak and got the large filet mignon… the steaks were cooked perfectly, had a sauce over them which was good… I personally wish the steaks were seasoned with Something… I had to salt and pepper mine way more than usual.

Full disclosure- I love steak dinners. If I was on death row, my last meal would be filet mignon, cooked, medium rare with baked potato and a chocolate milkshake. I have eaten steaks across this country from rundown steakhouses in small towns to huge steak houses in Las Vegas and Dallas. The best steak I have ever had was in a small town in Oklahoma and I still recall the first bite I took of that velvety rich flavored medallion cut. And that was 30 years ago. Charcoal house, easily ranks in the top 10 steakhouses in the country, and without a question the top steakhouse in St. Louis. This place is old school. I go here because the staff have worked here for decades and they know their job. The menu has four- five items. It’s not cluttered with pastas and salads and this that and the other. You go here to eat meat that is of the highest quality. It is prepared exactly as you want it by a master.
