Our Story
We Are Often Asked About The History Of The Chicken House And We Are Happy And Humbled To Share Our Story
The Chicken House Started In 1934 As A Seven-Seat Dinner Called Cooper’s Cafe
From 1946-1958, the restaurant was owned by Hanna Taylor and seated 32. It was during Ms. Taylor’s ownership that the restaurant was renamed the Chicken House. Leonard and Theresa Coble bought the restaurant May 1, 1958. At that time, a complete chicken dinner cost 65 cents. In 1994, their oldest son, Larry, and his wife Charlotte, became owners in the business and took on the day-to-day responsibilities of managing the restaurant
The Building You Are Sitting In Was Constructed On The Original Site In 1975
The previous structure burned to the ground on October 5, 1974, after being struck by lightning. The Cables had just completed a major renovation, but the only portion to be salvaged was the newly poured cement parking area. The Chicken House reopened for business on June 16, 1975. The new facility, with a seating capacity of 320, was built to accommodate larger crowds and offer flexibility for functions such as wedding rehearsal dinners, buffets and banquets. The kitchen was enlarged to allow for growth and to handle an expanding catering business
The Chicken House Has Been Recognized As One Of America’s Premier Chicken Restaurants By Several Notable Publications
USA Today (May 26, 2000) named it as one of the 50 best restaurants in the country and American Airlines’ American Way magazine (August 2002) recognized The Chicken House as one of the top five chicken restaurants. The Chicken House is also listed in the national dining guide, Where the Locals Eat, as well as many other Kansas restaurant guides. Locally, our customers have honored us with many kind words and by naming us their favorite chicken restaurant for 14 consecutive years in the Best of the Flint Hills Survey of area dinners
Fellow Restaurateurs Honored Leonard For His Achievements By Electing Him President Of The Kan Restaurant Association For The 1986 – 1987 Term
On March 18, 1988, Sunny Wheat Bread became the official state bread. As president of the KRHA, Leonard was one of the key figures in making this possible. In August, 1969, the KRHA named him Restaurateur of the Year and on May 9, 2005, Leonard Coble was inducted into the Kansas Restaurant Hall of Fame
Beyond The Legacy Of Its Ownership, What Makes The Chicken House So Special? Hard Work, Long Hours, Owner-Management, And Dedicated Employees Are Cornerstones Of Our Success
Among those dedicated employees are Margaret Wille and her son, Matt, who have been very loyal. Margaret has been working at the restaurant since 1967, and her son Matt started in 1980. Matt shares the responsibilities of head cook with Larry. Larry’s son, Shawn, has been busy following in his father’s footsteps. Shawn comes in during the early hours to help with prep work. Shawn also cashier and/or cater as needed. Dwayne, Larry’s brother, began making the cream pies after Leonard passed away and has the process down pat-just like his dad. On top of all of the special people who make the business successful are the extra steps that are taken to put a homemade touch on our offerings. We hand cut and tenderize our chicken fried steaks and hand bread our signature onion rings. The lettuce salad is cut fresh daily, and the chicken is also hand breaded to order. Customer orders are recited verbally to Larry and Matt, who memorize and prepare them with rarely a mistake. Many of our customers tell us that they don’t mind the short wait, knowing that their meals are being prepared
Alter Fighting His Battle With Cancer Leonard Passed Away In May 2005 At The Age Of 72
Even though Larry and Charlotte have taken over the business, Theresa continued to dedicate her time for the last 11 years overseeing all aspects of the operation. In March of 2016, Theresa passed away from congestive heart failure. The Chicken House owes its success for what it has become today, to both Theresa and Leonard, and we as a family are committed to continuing its legacy

Fantastic food and service! Got the 2-piece chicken dinner with mashed potatoes and green beans. Was enough for 2 meals and our server, Katie, was outstanding! Will always look forward to coming back when we’re in town.

Jed, our server, was fantastic! The chicken strips tasted just like fried chicken. The mashed potatoes are real. Great place!

We needed a last-minute place for family to gather in a private room after Mom’s funeral service. I called Chicken House, and they were happy to accommodate our group of over 30 with a private room and buffet dinner that was perfect for our needs. Highly recommended!

Went for lunch. I rather unfairly compare all chicken places to Stroud’s on 85th and Troost in KCMO and that’s why four stars here. But still, the fried chicken here looked amazing. It’s color could be the standard for what all other fried chicken could be compared to. It tasted good. It was fried chicken. They didn’t have mashed potatoes and gravy but I probably would still have chosen the baked potato. Worst part of the experience was an annoying fly buzzing around but it went away after no too long. I wish I’d tried the pie but I rarely do dessert. Good place for lunch. Would go again.

Chicken was super small pieces. Wait staff talked to each other vs waiting on people. Drinks weren’t refilled.

Wonderful. The staff was lovely and hard working. The coffee tasted great. The menu was nice and easy to understand. The chicken was the best friend chicken I’ve ever had. I got a thigh and a breast and it was the crispiest chicken I’ve ever had. I’ve lived all over the south and have had some fried chicken but that was the best I’ve ever had. Protip: get a side of gravy with the dinner meal. They also serve hash browns as a side. They have home made pie as well. I enjoyed ever bit.
