Fantastic food, amazing ambiance, excellent service. If you want the best gastronomic experience in Charlotte, then come to Counter-. The only thing I will caution is that when you order a wine pairing, the price they tell you does NOT include the mandatory service charge. Prepare to spend 20%+ more than the price listed for your wine. In my opinion, they should give the price with service charge included, since service charge is included in the food price. At a restaurant like Counter- price shouldn’t be a factor in your decision making. However, pricing should be more transparent.

I’ve waited a few days to post this review, as I wanted to more fully reflect on the meal. My expectations were very high, with the Chef’s recent James Beard victory only heightening them. I’ll use 2* Michelin restaurants in Europe as the bar, as Counter’s price point and culinary aspirations are best aligned with that marker. Against that standard, I left feeling okay about my dinner, but perhaps a bit underwhelmed.

We had the pleasure of attending a 10 course “Prince” inspired tasting/pairing and it was like nothing I’ve ever experienced to date! The chefs put so much thought into each course so that the ingredients and prep basically told the story of the Prince song that it was created for. Unbelievable how much skill and attention to detail that was shown- we loved it! The food not only looked like works of art but was absolutely delectable.

Holy cow delicious We did the Koa pop up and every single course was absolutely delicious. It’s truly a unique experience, I have done many tasting menus and enjoyed this one thoroughly. The wine pairings were also excellent. Great staff, great music, great food. This is a MUST experience if you can get a reservation.

Counter is exactly what the Charlotte food scene needed. As a self-proclaimed chef and foodie I struggle going out to restaurants in Charlotte as more often than not I’m left saying “well I could have made this better myself at home”. As a season pass holder for the last two years I’ve never EVER left Counter disappointed. Chef Sam Hart provides such a unique and multi-faceted dining experience I no longer feel the need to try other restaurants because each time I attend a Counter dinner it’s like I’m stepping into a new restaurant. Chef Sam’s attention to detail is untouched, and this goes beyond the flavors on your plate – from the utensils and dishes, the music paired with each plate and even the art on the wall – everything is selected with thought and purpose.

If you want the best food in Charlotte this is where you should eat. I have eaten at restaurants all over the world, including some with Michelin star(s), and I can honestly say that Counter- is ranked with the best of them. I have dined here for several of their events and will attend all that I can in the future as well. Dining with Chef Sam Hart at Counter- is an experience you will remember. Had the most unbelievable experience at Counter. We went for the “Cinema” meal and each one of the courses was paired with a movie theme. The experience included music and lighting. Chef Sam is a genius. He did such an incredible job. You could purchase a wine pairing but we opted for a bottle of wine. They didn’t have the one we wanted so he gave us a substitution and charged us the same amount even though the substitution was more money. It was definitely pricey ($175 pp) but I think it’s so worth it for a special occasion or if you really want to impress a date. Will definitely go back and try another theme.
