I was on my way home from setting up my daughter’s apartment in Des Moines, Iowa over the weekend. My husband had reserved a room for me at the Hawthorne; Cracker Barrel was just across the parking lot. After checking into the hotel, I drove over to the restaurant. It is within walking distance, but it would be dark by the time I finished the meal and I didn’t know the area to determine if I’d be safe walking back alone in the dark.

With Cracker Barrel you know going in that it’s generally speaking, a good place to sit for a spell for a very American-comfort food experience. I stopped here on a trip to Virginia and the service was great, the food good. Solid, recommend without reservation. Enjoy!

The food has seemingly gotten blander over the years. The servers are always excellent: personable, knowledgeable, friendly but harried. People just don’t seem to grasp the concept of tipping. We always tip a minimum of 20% and usually do 50% but seems like most do 10% if anything and that makes keeping good help hard to do.

Old fashioned down home good cookin, plain and simple. Best part tho is anyone can order from the kids menu … At my age I don’t eat big meals anymore and I still took leftover shrimp with me. I resisted the sale corner in the store tho because my suitcase was already full. Check it out next time you see a Cracker Barrel … it won’t disappoint!

I ordered the chicken and dumpling tonight, and they were so delicious!! I also had the mashed potatoes and apples. It did not disappoint. The service was amazing, and she kept our glasses full and never made us wait. I am so sad they closed the one in Grand Rapids, MI. I miss this restaurant

We wanted to stop for lunch while on the road. It’s been a while since we last ate there. I got the Bacon Hashbrown Casserole and Jim got the Southern Fried Chicken. His meal came with the option of two sides so he tried the corn and fried apples. James was our waiter was very attentive. The food was good and good portions. The gift shop was great snd reasonably priced.

Javier was a great server! Unfortunately, that’s where our good experience ended. Both of our pot pies were burnt (black on top and underneath the crust). Mgmt put our server in an awful position by giving him the explanation “that’s how they’re always cooked”. Absolutely not. The pot pie is my favorite dish and I’ve never seen it any different than lightly golden brown. They would not make another one, so I ordered the Farmer’s breakfast instead. Eggs were good but my sausage was completely black on one side. They need to seriously look at their cook staff if food is consistently coming out burnt. Why would you force a server to bring food out like that? Poor Javier. I felt terrible for him! If that wasn’t enough, both of our daughter’s dumplings were WAYYY too salty. I tried it and it was 3x the amount of salt there should have been in it. Worst Cracker Barrel experience ever. I love Cracker Barrel but I will not be returning to this location.
