The GPS took me here instead of Jessys taqueria. I said to myself “hey this must be a sign,” so I tried El Rey on Chesapeake blvd, and it was quite the disappointment. I would like to highlight that the service was great, the cashier is a hard worker, and so are the cooks. I seriously wanted to enjoy it. I liked the vibe inside. I walked in to that place really hoping to enjoy it. I was served a big overcooked carne asada, barely any beans, the most unflavored rice. The steak tasted flavorful but the cook on it made it unbareable, it was so hard to chew that I wanted to return it but by that point I was already at home. The beans were tasty, but sadly they only gave me like a spoonful. I ordered chips and salsa and every single salsa was watery, tasteless, and had 0 texture which I’ve never experienced before at a Mexican restaurant. Not even grocery store bought, Taco Bell.. or Applebees for that matter. I had to mix habanero salsa with their chips and salsa so that it would taste like something.

The puerco en salsa roja was Burt looks like what was in the bottom of the pot and the Chi chromes taste like the ones you buy at a corner store with red sauce They should be ashamed to serve food so Pricy needless to say I wish I would’ve went to kfc

I ordered three tacos while in the area for work. I had a chicken, steak, and pork taco with Cilantro, onions, and cheese on corn tortillas. It was amazing. The meat was cooked to perfection. Still moist, not dried out and overcooked. The corn tortillas were great, too. The ladies running the kitchen at cashier were all very friendly, and the food is priced well for what I ordered, in my opinion. Would definitely eat here more if I were a local.

This place is very small and needs better ventilation because we got out smelling like oil! However, the food is great. It tastes like homemade and is NOT salty. This is a big plus for me.

Been looking for a legit taco shop since leaving home. Lots of Mexican restaurants but no taco shops near us. A coworker recommended this place to my husband, so we made the 20min drive and ate here so our food wouldn’t be cold and soggy. 10/10 highly recommend, will definitely be eating here again. I got the California burrito, my husband got the barbacoa plate. Everything was very good, if we lived closer I’d eat here regularly.

Such a cute little whole in the wall restaurant. Absolutely love the freshly made chips and salsa! I highly recommend their platos de pupusas and birria tacos. And they give you so much food that you can’t not keep coming back.
