Everything we ate at Essie’s was delicious, including that cheesecake option for dessert Food seemed freshly made upon order which mean some wait time but no complaints here. Staff was friendly, chef stopped by to say thank you, a nice touch and reminder of why we should support small businesses. Dining room is beautiful, music volume perfect, all around amazing place for a date night dinner.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Essie’s, an elegant yet casual American restaurant located in the heart of Little Italy in Poughkeepsie, NY. The dining room pays homage to the things of old with industrial and reclaimed wood features to create a cozy, warm and inviting environment. The air circulation was not what I expected, but it was manageable.

I was visiting Poughkeepsie for college tours and found Essie’s! My family and I ordered chicken and burger dishes and loved them soooo much! I ordered a coffee and something about it was so comforting! We all shared a cheesecake, also very good. Absolutely recommend this place

This is the type of place you expect in NYC or Miami or some other major metropolis. The menu is small, but there is probably something for everyone and they have daily specials that are very unsimilar to the regular menu, so they really are different choices. The food quality and taste is that of a fine restaurant, maybe even a Michilin star rated restaurant. We were all wholey impressed and pleased. We didn’t dig into it but the restaurant seems to be a tribute to “Essie” and I assume it is her photos that adorn the walls. We were not in the mood for alcohol so I can’t attest to the drinks.

Came for brunch and had the chicken and waffles. The place is small, but doesn’t have the feel of a tight fit. Our waiter was very friendly and on top of it. I had a glass of champagne with my brunch and it was perfect. The fried chicken was the main character of this dish, well seasoned, crispy and juicy. The waffles were good but they weren’t special, and I truly wish they would have been so that the dish would have a 5/5 rating. I believe the butter was a vanilla butter and I could have gone without it.

fantastic find… surprisingly unconventional starters that really shine (ie. beet nachos and grits croquettes) and fantastic entries that were cooked to perfection (remembering fondly the osso buco, chicken, cod and duck). talking to chef walker after was a treat all by itself…

My friend and I enjoyed Essie’s so much, we dined there two nights in a row during our May weekend in Poughkeepsie. Part of the draw was the food, but we assigned equal weight in our considerations to the general ambiance and pleasure of eating in a restaurant where we felt comfortable, welcome, and generally at home. If Essie’s was in my neighborhood, I’d be there all the time. The sound levels allowed for conversation and, while it’s not a big space, we did not feel confined or hemmed in by neighboring tables. I couldn’t write a review without acknowledging the stellar wait staff, who took my food allergy perhaps more seriously than I take it myself.

We went to Essie’s for our anniversary dinner last month and it was INCREDIBLE! The service top notch, the food amazing, and the drinks were so good. It’s truly worth supporting, I can’t wait to go back and try their brunch! The jambalaya croquettes, and the ribs were the best!

Chef Brandon has a wonderful place in Poughkeepsie. The environment inside is welcoming and decorated well. The brunch cocktails are a must! We got the grits croquettes and the texture was perfect. The crispy chicken sandwich was fried well and full of flavor. Can’t wait to come back!
