Vincent DePhilippis Born in New York NY, raised in Naples Italy returned to New York City at the age of 18. Vincent DePhilippis and Madeleine Manfredi from Nimes France met in New York NY (Mamma and Papa) married in 1925, then settled in Westchester Pennsylvania. Then moved to San Diego in 1947 where they opened an Italian market named Cash & Carry Italian foods on India Street in San Diego. 1950 was the beginning of what has become a very successful line of family restaurants that are today know as Filippi’s Pizza Grottos that are owned and operated by original family members of the founders. Every Filippi’s pizza is AWESOME! We’ve been to almost all of them, but I gotta say this one was the best!! OMG! The pizza is so good! Great atmosphere, friendly staff, very clean, and again, fantastic pizza!! Also got the Antipasto Salad, it’s so fresh This place is great!!! You’ll love it

I waited at least 10 minutes before being acknowledged then handed a menu and told to sit where I wanted. A party of four and two were seated after me. (I was alone) both got helped first and I had to ask the waitress as she passed by one of many times if anyone was going to help me after at least another 10 minutes or more. I sat by the kitchen, with her body half in she leaned out to ask if I would like water, I quickly said yes and was ready to order. She never even came out completely to take my order. Just asked what I wanted. I took a few bites than asked for a container to go. The lasagna was nothing compared to the Poway location but the bread was delicious. When she brought the container she apologized and said she was the only one there but someone else just got in. Funny enough she had plenty of time to laugh and joke with the other patrons multiple times. Just because I was a party of one doesn’t mean I won’t tip well. I left a sad face on my receipt and left. I won’t go back!

The service was good and friendly. The small antipasto salad was a great size to share for two people. We ordered pizza, which was also good, not great but good. We were stuffed after one slice of the 13-in size for fit a king plus half of the salad each.

A great choice for lunch this day. The salad was more than just lettuce, very crisp, no brown leafs at all and there was Olives, tomato and a bit of purple cabbage added. The main courses were good portions and very tasty. Of course we’ll return again.

This Filippi’s was pretty good. The flavor of the food is great. I was not a fan of the pastrami pizza, because ethe pastrami was a little too stringy, more than usual for pastrami. The sauces for the noodles was great and the garlic bread was really good as well. Would definitely come back, just get the cheese pizza instead next time. The philly sandwich was amazing.

As always there is a wait, Sunday around 630ish, a bit longer then was told, and while we are waiting was told that there out of prime rib. I’m sure glad I was not positive on ordering that cause I have had it before and it was amazing, so we continue to wait because it had been already 30 min. Got sat after 40 min. I already put in the time and there food is so good. Found out that there where staff that decided they didn’t want to come in, ding ding ding, now we know about that wait, lol, I had the laguini and clams and the wifey had spiggiti and meat balls, omg both so amazingly good, and the garlic bread is always tasty. The waitress was fantastic as well as the rest of the staff, will be back but next time we will call and will see what the wait is and or make reservations, bit all in all simply delicious and great atmosphere, you have to try this place out.

I don’t know why but the pizza here tastes significantly different than the other Filippis and it is not for the better. I’ve tried the one in Jamul and Santee and they both have incredible dough and cheese, but this Filippis is such a downgrade in comparison.
