The First and Last Tavern has been a Hartford landmark since 1936. The First and Last Tavern which derives its name for its location being the first tavern inside the town line and the last tavern when leaving the City of Hartford. For many years, it was know as the “tradesmen’s bar” when the “Original Special” of pasta, with a meatball/sausage and salad on a single plate was served at the bar or in a booth, often with a draft beer or glass of wine. Over time the First and Last pasta sauce has gained a following in the community. As the years passed, the sauce remained the same and the award winning coal fired brick oven pizza was added to the menu. The First and Last Tavern truly is a Hartford institution.
Long-running tavern serving brick-oven pizzas, pastas & other Italian entrees in a casual setting. Based on 776 reviews, the restaurant has received a rating of 4.5 stars. Price $$

A favorite of ours before going to the theater. An old school family friendly Italian restaurant. Food is fresh and excellent quality. Food came and we dug in so fast I forgot to get a picture. Great service and owners are around taking care of everyone. Check them out if you are looking for a great meal and old Italian charm!

What a fantastic find! Drove up from New Haven to take a friend out to dinner. Had wonderful service, meal had lovely pacing, everything came just in time. Just walking it was heavenly – what wonderful aromas and welcomes! Delicious seafood, fresh amazing veggies and and delicious pasta and drinks. Definitely going back!

I very rareley give 5 star reviews. You walk in and the vibe very friendly and historic. We sat at the bar. They have a fresh raw bar with oysters, clams and shrimp. We came to meet up with someone who was running very late. The bar tender gave us 2 different kinds of bread and 2 shrimp on the house. We ordered a Margherita pizza. I have had the best pizza in NY,CT,MA, AZ and RI. When I say that their pizza is better than Sally’s and the original Pepe’s I know thats a bold statement. I dont go to Hartford much but I will be back to take my friends and family here to try the pizza. It had to be fresh basil and crushed tomato sauce. It was a very pleasant surprise and I now have a new pizza to measure every other pizza by.

We rarely get into Hartford for dinner. This was an excellent choice to have dinner with friends and catch-up. Service was wonderful, the food great. We need to make a point of returning to try more on the menu.

This place is Legendary, and after coming here for the 1st time, i can see why! We came to First & Last for my Father’s 80th Birthday. I had the privilege of meeting the Owners, who were both so welcoming, the food was OUTSTANDING, and both our Servers couldn’t have been more attentive. This place is 100 Stars! I live in Florida, but whenever i am back in the Hartford area, i will be coming back here again.

Love the pizza and family atmosphere but the food is bland I’ll be the first and last time having dinner in this place lacks flavor really!

It’s very unlikely I give a restaurant a bad review but when it involves my money, my review isn’t so nice. The other day, I go to First and last and I had an amazing pizza, and when it was time to sign the receipt, the total including a tip was $37.36 (as show in the picture) . When I check my bank transactions, they charge me $82!!! From where? I have no clue. I was fuming and had to call my bank to sort this out because the restaurant wouldn’t answer. I have no clue what they were trying to accomplish but it was not funny and it does not make me want to come back. You’ve lost local customers. Now, I’m one to be honest about where I eat and go and the pizza was good, I’ll give it that, but PLEASE watch your receipt, and bank transactions…

The neapolitan pizza was really good, large was enough for 3 hungry people but realistically I’ll probably order my own large pizza for myself next time because it’s that good.

Okay place with some highlights. For a place that tries to deliver an Italian home-cooked meal experience it falls a bit short of the real deal.

Phenomenal establishment! The food was delicious, the staff was awesome, and the wine offerings were plentiful. The stuffed eggplant was memorable! I would highly recommend a visit to First & Last, and if it’s open, the bakery of the same name across the street.
