Gates is a Kansas City staple, often named as a favorite BBQ joint by KC natives. The Gates BBQ sauce is notably different from other local sauces. It has more of a vinegar and smoke flavor and is also less viscous and less sweet than other KC sauces. Still a sauce you must try at some point. In my experience the spicy Gates sauce also has much more of a kick than other spicy BBQs.

I went here when I was 6 years old with my dad and remembered it. Coming back years later it was just a wonderful as I remembered. Best brisket sandwich I could remember. I love Texas barbecue but my gosh, this is just as good!!!! Anyone traveling to KC needs to eat here! Also the people here, are beyond lovely. Thank you.

As Rome says…have a take, and do not suck. Know what you want before you get to the counter! Don’t be mad…be ready! Gates is a place that knows exactly what it is, and what it isn’t. For an optimal experience, know your order before you get to the counter. Don’t ask what they sides are, you already know what MacNCheese is, and you know you want it.

Gates is a long-time favorite favorite of mine, and it hasn’t lost anything. Walking up from the parking lot, the smell of smoke invited us in. As we entered, we heard the familiar loud “Hi, may I help you?” as we walked up to the counter. As always, I got some ribs and original sauce, but because I am trying to eat healthier I got a double decker turkey sandwich as well. Everything was perfect, smoky and delicious. My daughter loved her pork bun and fries.
