I have mixed feelings about this restaurant. The service was really friendly, fast, efficient and good. The restaurant was packed on a friday night. We started our meal with the Miso soup. It was overall good, but I felt it may have been a bit too salty and grainy for my liking. We then had the fried gyoza as an appetizer. It had a strange pork like mushy texture for the filling. It tasted good, but weird texture. Our entrees included the Spider roll, which was really nice and delicious. The pork Katsu meal was really good as well. it included a salad, fruit , rice and a sauce for the Katsu. The salad had the normal Japanese ginger, carrot, cucumber dressing. In my opinion, it tasted “off” and not like the normal dressings you would generally get in other Japanese restaurants. It wasn’t sweet enough and may of had too much ginger flavor. Another entree we had was the sushi and sashimi dinner. It was beautifully presented and the sushi roll (california imitation crab?) was good. The sashimi pieces of salmon, white fin tail, shrimp and tuna were good and fresh. My only criticism was that they were cut way too thick to enjoy. Part of eating sashimi is the thinner slices that are delicate and will melt in your mouth. These pieces were “hacked” into chunks and thick slices. Way too thick. The last entree we had was the Chirashi. This is basically sashimi variety on top of a bowl of sushi rice. This was beautifully presented. Again my only complaint was that the sushi pieces were twice as thick as they should be, sliced. We finished our meal with a light and creamy green tea mochi ice cream. Overall, a pleasant experience and will return to try other dishes.

I have been going to Gen Kai since I was a little kid, I am 45 now. My Dad helped as the Realtor for the first location in Dana Point. Always great. We got some rolls and the monkfish liver. A great place for working lunches

Best Sushi restaurant on the west coast! Go hungry and trust Yoshi the master chef choose for you. Trust me! Every time I’ve visited, I’ve enjoyed something new and exciting. Perfect for small groups. They were even accommodating to my young son. I highly recommend this place. I also recommend not ordering your normal traditional plain rolls, but be adventurous. Yoshi will impress you with his design and care to the finest details that will make every bite delightful.

The sushi tasted fresh and the fish was soft. Went there for a date night with my boyfriend. Sat down within 5 minutes of walking in at the bar. The sushi chef served us 2 delicious sushi rolls. We shared them and we were satisfied. There’s a ton of different fish options.

What a disappointing dinner. What happened to fresh sushi?? The salmon sushi was stinky and we sent it back. All our rolls were drenched in this gross mayonnaise sauce! And the weird signs placed at every table and all over the restaurant makes for an odd dining experience. Sorry Gen Kai, you use to be a 10.

An unassuming but delicious little sushi bar. Five sushi chefs popping out plenty of great rolls and some interesting appetizers ( spicy tuna stuffed Anaheim peppers, fried pop shrimp on spicy tuna rolls, baked green mussels , crab stuffed tomatoes… fresh local and worth it 🙂

Excellent! The service from start to finish was honest and friendly. The sushi, specialty rolls, and hand rolls were nicely presented and tasted clean and fresh. The pop-up shrimp and spicy tuna specialty roll was especially good. If I am back in the area I will definitely come back.

The best sushi restaurant in South Orange County. Melt in your mouth thick-cut yellow tail sashimi. Extensive cooked and raw selection. Fresh wasabi. Chefs have a fun presence. Overall awesome!
