Welcome to the General Mercantile, home of the finest “gold” to be found on Last Chance Gulch! Since 1971 the Merc has been providing a unique counter culture to the community of Helena, Montana along with some of the best coffee around. The hissing of the vintage espresso machines and aroma of freshly ground espresso fill the cozy niches throughout the store, all of which are a perfect places to sip a warm latte, hot cocoa, or an old-fashioned soda while playing scrabble or other board games. The Merc also sells unique gifts, cards, novelties, candies, and more. Come pony up to the bar and enjoy a very fine cup of coffee with us. The General Mercantile is a Helena staple. They make wonderful espresso and the service is always friendly. There are lots of funky and quickly gift items, cards, and stickers to view and purchase. I would recommend to anyone.

I could have spent several hours in here. So many things to look at and laugh at. Nice little cubbies hidden away to sit and enjoy beverages. The clerks were very nice friendly and plenty of smiles. One of the young ladies helped me pick out a tea for my daughter that was sick at the time. Very helpful.

The hot chocolate here is really good. If you want to have an experience at a local shop with fun stuff for adults, this is the place. If you bring your children so they can experience something fun, hope that that can’t read. A lot of the gifts have swear words all over them. My 9yo found a book titled “100 ways to eat cock”. While the folks around us probably thought it was hilarious, I now have to explain to him what that’s about. It’s funny as an adult, but I’d say this place really isn’t for kids to have a undistracted, unplugged, board game moment with their parents.

I grew up drinking italian sodas here as a kid, but I tried the coffee here today for the first time, and it was wonderful! So much tastier than Starbucks. It made me sad though that they ripped out the cool seating right in the front and put in the long table. It was a lot cooler before! Also seems a bit silly that they don’t allow laptops or wifi, I get it, but at the same time you’re kind of dissuading young people from coming? Seem like something a boomer would do.

Great place to get a coffee and shop for goodies and teas. More of a place to come and have a social experience or meet friends rather than have a quiet moment to yourself. Be aware they DO NOT allow laptop use in the shop. Not a complaint, I just would have liked to have known before I came. I respect that they are trying to preserve a certain culture but it is not something I am personally looking for. That is the reason for 4 stars.
