My husband and I ate at this restaurant last night. Very disappointed. I ordered a chopped steak with grilled onions. The “chopped steak ” was an obvious processed patty that was obviously cooked from frozen. It has a freezer burn taste. My husband had a fish sandwich which was also obviously a processed perfectly square piece of breaded fish.

I’ve done quite a bit of traveling, and lived in a few different states, I never found anything like their beef roll elsewhere. It is the food choice I crave when I’m away. Highly recommended.

I’ve lived in sandwich for a little over 3 years now and I’ve only been able to get food once. I’ve called plenty of times, during business hours, and I get the answering machine saying it’s closed for the day. I’ve also tried going inside and have seen people inside, again during business hours, yet the doors are locked and no one answers the door, even to explain they are closed. What I do remember of the food I was actually able to order over 3 years ago, the chicken was dry but the sides were good.

I’ve been to Genes chicken well over 100 times easily. Used to live right next to the place. Try the beef roll, great pizza that will beat any upper Midwest pizzeria hands down. The fried chicken is epic. They also do a family fried chicken meal. So if you come to the largest county fair in Illinois the Sandwich Fair the first Wed thru Sunday Labor Day week you have to check this place out. It’s only an hour drive or 60 miles due west of Chicago or 70 miles south of Rockford.

Love this place. Best beef rolls ever. I worked here when I was 17 For 2 years – 18 years ago (yikes). The owner not only taught me good work ethic but also that as an owner of an establishment, to never be too proud to do any and all tasks you ask your staff to do. I now own my own business in another state far away and remember what I learned long ago with my own staff. When I come back to visit my family I always look forward to stoping by for my favorite Sandwich IL food – A Gene’s beef roll with extra crispy French fries (one of the few places that actually makes them extra crispy when I ask).

We tried out Gene’s after my sister’s play at the high school and I was pleasantly surprised. It may not look like too much from the outside but we ordered a family order of the fried chicken, 2 beef rolls, a small pepperoni pizza, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, and onion rings.

Haven’t eating here in years… forgot what we were missing when we moved out of sandwich. Beef rolls were fantastic even as a reheat next day. Our sausage pizza was really good too, sweeter sauce like Suzy’s in Plano. Very satisfied.

If I could give 0 stars…I would. We have been going to Gene’s for quite a few years, and the pizza and service has been good. For the first time, in 5 years, we decided to try something new; the deep dish pizza. We ordered 2 16-inch deep dish pizzas, in which we found 2 hairs! I called Gene’s right away and told them. The owner got on the phone and I told him the issue; he literally laughed at me. He told me that he could not refund our credit card because they ‘don’t know how’. They offered to make us another pizza (we waited 45 min prior to picking up our pizza due to deep dish), and I said no. We will never order from here again, and not because of the hair we found in our food, but due to the lack of customer service and care.
