Before there was a hotel, there was a saloon. In 1852, thousands of thirsty prospectors filled their glasses at the original Golden Gate Saloon. After Grass Valley was destroyed by a fire in 1855, the owners quickly adapted and sold whiskey and beer to loyal customers from a tent among the rubble the next day.
A seamless flow from the bar to the dining room and outdoor patio offers our guests the perfect mix of food and drink. Enjoy a contemporary menu with the fresh flavors of California and a dash of Mexico, utilizing the bounty of our local and organic farms. The Golden Gate menu is updated seasonally.

I ordered the Pork Milanese (pictured). It was good, not great, but still good. The price is fair, $16, but I expected more. I was there with three other guests and none were extremely satisfied with their meal. I will say the buttermilk basil sauce was very good. There wasn’t a lot on the brunch menu, which is the only menu you can order from until 2 PM.

First time at this place. The food was good but not great by a long shot, it was extremely salty and barely edible. I did not finish it because it was too salty. Did the chef even taste this stuff before he sent it out, I don’t think so. The service could have been a little better, there was long gaps between seeing the waitstaff. The atmosphere was nice being in an old hotel.

Went here on Father’s Day. Thought the Lion’s Mane barbacoa plate sounded interesting. It was 38$. This was easily the worst dish I’ve ever eaten at this price point. Imagine eating dried mushroom jerky, if there is even such a thing, sprinkled with chili powder and served with some breakfast potatoes and over salted avocado. It was laughably awful. California cuisine gone too far. On top of that, the service was terrible. It took us an hour and a half to get from start to finish.

Drinks are very expensive and weak. When I asked the bar tender to make mine a little stronger – my gin and tonic was basically all tonic – he abliged but didn’t tell me he would charge me for a whole other drink.

Beautifully buffet brunch with nice selection of thick bacon, the best patty sausage, fritatta and so much more. We sat outside on a beautiful Saturday enjoying our nicely prepared cocktails and gentle music.

Noisy but great ambiance. We ordered the Brussels Sprouts for an appetizer and they were delicious! However our entrees left us greatly disappointed. Both the short ribs and the Thai snapper were over salted. And I mean OVER SALTED. The short ribs were pretty good in spite of this because they came with rice and tortillas. The Thai snapper was the second most disappointing meal of my life! The fish was burned and came skin, head and bones completely on the plate. Had I understood this in advance I would not have ordered it. I’m not a stranger to fish but between the unappealing presentation and my ability to only get 3-4 bites after cleaning it up and discarding the skeleton and skin and burnt areas I felt this was certainly not a $40 plate of food and if I come back I will only order Brussels and another side.

Second time here inside the Holbrooke Hotel. The first was epic as Mac DeMarco showed up for an ‘after party’ downstairs. Everything is superb!! This place is worth the drive.

Very romantic place for Valentines day! Stopped in for a specialty drink before heading across to Cirionos in Grass Valley. Located on main street in Grass Valley with a historic hotel and stories of GHOStS haunt this hotel/bar/restaurant. Old but remodeled elevator. Smoked chicken wings are great as they have a smoker in the backyard. Friendly and classy atmosphere. Get the chocolate old fashioned from Kawika and you are set!

So the drinks were outstanding. 5 stars for the Wild Buck cocktail and Old Fashioned. I’ll go back for that. For the food, both the chicken adobada and ribs were far too salty. For what you pay the chili verde should have had a lot more pork. So I’ll pass on the food. 3 stars for dinner. But the drinks were excellent.

It’s a cool spot to grab some food and drinks. We had dinner there, and it was good. In my opinion, the main dishes selection, is not normally what you find in GV area. The appetizers where good, the drinks where good, the desert where delicious. No special running when we went.
