The Golden Ox opened for business on the first floor of the Kansas City Live Stock Exchange building in May of 1949, catering to ranchers and farmers who brought their cattle to the stockyards. It remained a Kansas City destination until it closed in December of 2014. Now, under new ownership, the Golden Ox has undergone a massive renovation that has preserved much of the building’s historic integrity.

Quote possibly the best ribeye I’ve ever had. I got the American Royal ribeye and I’m not sure I can adequately describe the feelings I had while consuming this beautiful cut of meat. I got it with a side of asparagus and lobster Mac and cheese, paired with Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon.

Good waiter, but forgot our toddlers kids meal after we made sure to order it early. Arrived well after our food. Baby was then out of gas. As for food, got the $65 ribeye. The atmosphere is beautiful! Low lighting, very romantic. The food was delicious. We ordered the stuffed mushrooms for app, my husband and I both ordered the flat iron steak with broccolini and mashed potatoes. Everything is recommended! We had a big party of 15 and were able to get a private room. Our waitress handled us amazingly! We’ll be returning!

Had a great KC strip here along with a chocolate cheesecake for dessert. Sat a the bar. Service was excellent. It wasn’t crowded. The crab cakes were serviceable. Not their shining star but good. Would recommend splitting as there are two. The lobster Mac and cheese was very underwhelming. Had a very herb and sage forward flavor that didn’t quite work with the delicate lobster. I would have been happier with the potatoes. It’s old school and was a throwback to when our dad would take us. Great place and a time capsule.

Their dishes are expensive for a reason—because they are worth every penny spent. Delicious. I opted for the Manhattan steak (14oz of sheer bliss) with grilled asparagus. Our waiter John was great, and the general manger, Joe, shared great history about the stockyards beginnings and the fire that took it down. Every bite was savored and the ambiance takes you back to simpler times when beef—it was always what was for dinner!
