The town seemed sleepy on a hot Tuesday afternoon in late July and there were only a few guests dining early in the evening when we arrived at The Half Shell. We sat alone, my husband, pup and I, in the shaded outdoor section where 70’s slow rock cranked through the warm air. Andrew, our server, came out and promised cold waters for us and an ice filled bowl of water for our doggie. Our server had a casual tone, but he surprised us with confident and spot on suggestions from the menu – “why order fried shrimp on a roll, when you could have freshly assembled crab cakes?” – indeed, Andrew! And so we ordered. The dozen oysters were smooth but I prefer the brinier variety. Still, they paired well with my Cloudy Bay sauvignon blanc, and I couldn’t complain about the yummy cocktail sauce or the Texas hot sauce offered that spiced them up. Our friendly server was 100% correct. The crab cakes came with 2 patties drizzled with a remoulade sauce which my husband I split (he giving me the bigger portion – good guy:) We selected grilled asparagus (nicely al dente) and the home made Old Bay chips as sides. Really delicious all around. The bar inside looked very cute and the hotel which the grill is connected to also looked sweet. Check it out.

We visited during the Urbana oyster festival. Although there were very busy we were able to get a table. They were short staffed but the staff was working hard to take good care of us. The food was slow coming out as the kitchen was overloaded with orders but it did taste good and was delicious. All in all they did a really good job taking good care of us.

I just took my family back for lunch again. The strawberry and goat cheese salad was sublime. I’m not even joking it was so amazing. The cheese crab covered pretzel was out of this world fun. We tried rockfish for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. Chef David is doing amazing things here! The mushroom risotto is nicely crafted. The chicken wings are spectacular with the house made ranch dressing, Great portion sizes. I highly recommend coming here and having a meal.

Great food, we went during the oyster festival so they were swamped. There is a bar across the hall. Building looks to be repurposed as the bathrooms are down the hall and to the left, all inside the same place.

You would probably be better off cooking at home. Service and ambiance okay, food not that great. Didn’t even eat the mashed potatoes, they were like glue. Hush puppies very doughy. Crab cake and asparagus okay. Lack luster presentation. Will not be back

Had an amazing meal! The place was extremely short staffed but the young woman that was doing everything but cooking did an amazing job of pushing through! Food was well worth the wait! I’ll definitely come back again!

First visit and it definitely will not be our last!! The crab dip pretzel was amazing! Small Caesar salad with shrimp, salmon with mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts, hush puppies and deviled eggs! Everything was on point! Well seasoned and the perfect temperature! The guy that started as our server was great! (Didn’t catch his name, sorry!) Then Marissa and Melissa tag teamed and the service was very good. The absolute cherry on top was the dessert we took home…. Salted caramel cheesecake…. Likely the best I’ve ever had! Thanks for a lovely experience as we celebrated our anniversary (also, not sure how we only got a pic of the pretzel…. Too excited to eat everything else I guess LoL)

Trisha is a fantastic server! She made us feel very welcome. The restaurant itself was a great surprise. We had the pan seared rock fish and it was excellent. Not a fish you can find often, so glad we took the opportunity and that it was done so well. Good specialty drinks, too – try the Half She’ll Punch and ask for the beer selection!
