We went for the first time to have lunch at J & G Family Restaurant and Catering in Spartanburg. We buy fresh fish and seafood next door frequently and always saw people happily carrying out food out of this restaurant. The reviews were good so I thought we’d give them a try. Betty took our order, we sat down and our food soon arrived.

My Significant Other, Mike, and I discovered J&G Family Restaurant when we went from Asheville, NC to the Costco in Spartanburg. Soul Food to me means you put your heart and soul into your cooking and they do just that here. Mike said they have the best fried chicken he has ever had. Bobby, Aunt Bea, John, Johnny, and all the cooks became family to us! Mike passed away in February and my next trip down was hard, but the hugs and warmth I received that day was so special. I went down yesterday for lunch (didn’t need anything from Costco) and it’s like going home. Oh, and the food is great!!

We were raised in Spartanburg and had excellent soul food restaurants back in the day, like Woodward’s, Southside, but they closed. We wanted to have some flavorful food and saw J & G next to Sellar’s Seafood. So we went in. We were greeted by a tall man who thanked us for coming in. He asked if we wanted take out or to eat in. I am guessing he was the owner, Johnny. We wanted to eat there. I ordered fried catfish, macaroni and cheese, fried okra and collards. My brother ordered smothered pork chops with potato salad, green beans, and cabbage. Both meals came with cornbread. I also ordered chicken livers. The food was all delicious and very well seasoned. It was just what we were looking for. We had enough to take home and my mom enjoyed the fried fish too. We will be back!

Wow – where do I start? My wife and I had the pleasure of eating here last night. I can honestly say that without a doubt this was the most welcomed we have ever felt in any restaurant ever, from the moment we entered we were made to feel like family…..and not just by the employees but by the other customers too. Now let’s talk about the food! Simply amazing, I had the ribs with potato salad, green beans and banana pudding while my wife had the chopped steak with fried okra, mashed potatoes and banana pudding. All of the food was outstanding and at a price that makes you do a double take, no way we got all that with a couple of sweet teas for $22 (including tax), why yes we did! Our only regret is that we don’t live in Spartanburg but I can assure you we will be making the trip from Johnson City again!
