The owners are friendly and happy to talk about the story behind the name. Other than the bread and cheese, everything is made in house from the pickles to the ice cream.

Food that invokes an joyful emotional response! It is rare to find home made style meals in a restaurant environment at a reasonable price but they have done exactly this. The friendly owners and staff take the time to listen to you and help guide you through your selection of unique and hand crafted menu options. From hearty meals to signature sauces the possibilities are almost endless.

Jack and the Bear is a hidden gem off the beaten path to the upper peninsula. The staff is friendly, their food is made fresh and on Fridays that have burrito specials full of their legendary BBQ.

Glad there’s a local bbq close to home. We had the family meal deal #1 with pulled pork, and brisket; 2 cheddar jacked mashed potatoes and 2 sweet slaws. We tried the Memphis sweet, Kentucky bourbon, and wasp bbq sauces. The brisket was decent and tender with a good amount of fat it was just missing a little more flavor and a slight crisp on the edges. The pulled pork was SUPERIOR. The flavor was phenomenal, it was really juicy and tender. The cheddar jacked potatoes were flavorful with butter and creamy (I would suggest a red potato with a cream base and some steak seasoning), the sweet slaw was more of a zesty cilantro slaw, it was good and fresh tasting. The Memphis sweet was top dog, it was sweet and thick with a nice brown sugar/spiced flavor. The Kentucky bourbon was a little thin with a heavy bourbon flavor and kinda tangy. The wasp tasted like it was a peppered whisky sauce and was thin. A few suggestions for sides would be a brisket Mac and cheese, fried okra slices, and maybe some fried jalapeno chips with a zesty ranch. Or maybe some jalapeno corn muffins. Otherwise it was a great find! We thoroughly enjoyed the food.

Grabbed the half pound of ribs and made it a meal with a half pound of the homemade cheddar mashed potatoes. I went with the recommended sweet sauce for the meat and was blown away by the flavor. They really know their stuff at Jack and the Bear BBQ. The rib bones just slid out, perfectly clean, leaving me with massive, and delicious piles of rib meat that practically dissolved when pressed with a fork. The ribs were rich in flavor, with a perfectly cooked, crispy, exterior. The hint of cinnamon in the sauce paired fantastically with the flavor of the ribs. Honestly, I was surprised by how much a half pound of ribs was. If you’re a light eater you will definitely be taking some food home. The meal ran me around $16, and I will definitely be going back for more; I pay almost as much going to fast food for a combo meal and this blows that away.

Had tacos and Cole slaw as a meal. It was soo good. Got to try the ice cream which was handmade. I instantly regretted not getting a float or shake. Pickles were hand made sweet pickles. Loved the food. Will come again!
