My family and I are out of town. I was really excited to see a soul food restaurant nearby seeing that they can be hard to come by. I had the whiting with yams and mac. The fish was delicious! Unfortunately, the sides were not. My complimentary cornbread was borderline burnt. The yams looked nothing like the online photo and was under seasoned. The macaroni and cheese was more savory with seasonings to the point the cheese didn’t shine. I’m hoping we came on a tough day seeing that our food didn’t match the reviews.

What an excellent place for a stop! Good food , some of it great! Really good fried liver, light on the batter, terrific streak fries, and good sides particularly the collards with smoked turkey. Sadly no fried green tomatoes to try, but the cornmeal crust fried (cat)fish was tasty! Nice banana pudding too! Lovely decor inside and super friendly service!

Randomly found this place online as I was looking for a good spot to eat after church. This place is a gem! As you can see I got the Catfish platter that comes with Cornbread. For my sides I got Mac and Cheese and Fried Okra. Everything was AMAZING!! I will be back again for sure!

I had been wanting to try out Johnny Ray’s for quite a while. I finally got around to visiting their establishment for some carry-out. I was a bit surprised by their location. They are surrounded by what looks like industrial businesses, but that is neither here, nor there. I am a native Detroiter and I am used to visiting soul food restaurants located in the back of liquor stores. Nothing wrong with that. Some of the best places are those hidden treasures in places one would not expect to find them. I haven’t had REAL soul food since the last time I was in Detroit, which was several years ago. I can say that Johnny Ray’s does a great job and brought back some Detroit memories. I ordered the fried catfish, fried okra, lemon pepper wings, string beans, mac & cheese, collard greens & cabbage….all of which came with cornbread. Everything had good flavor and I would visit them again. One thing I will say is that if you’re doing carry-out, you’ll want to place your order ahead of time. I went there and placed my order at the counter and the young gent behind the register told me 10 minutes — which I thought to myself, if they could pull my order off in that timeframe it would be a Christmas miracle. Well folks, I ended up waiting roughly 35 minutes plus. I wasn’t upset about it, because I knew from visiting other soul food establishments such as this that it simply would not be a reality getting an order of that nature so fast. As long as you go in knowing it’s not “fast food” and you that you need to patiently wait, all is good. At the end of the day, Johnny Ray’s get’s a thumbs up from me.

Delicious fried chicken livers with light breading. The greens with smoked turkey was salty but I enjoyed them. The Mac and cheese was peppery and cheesy probably not great for kids but I loved the unexpected peppery twist. I ate in and the meal was served in styrofoam with plastic ware. Great for take out and the leftovers but probably not a great experience for a date. Easy location for a great meal near the airport, Comfort Inn and Hyatt hotels.

If you haven’t been here, Get here! Found this hidden gem in Sterling, Virginia. Tucked in the cut while getting gas on spring break. I must say I was blown away by the service and taste of the food. We placed a pick up order to-go over the phone and my only complaint was that the Mac and cheese was a 30 minute wait so we didn’t get it. We didn’t get the whole Johnny Ray’s Sultry Soul Food experience. That my only complaint.

They have been generous enough to let me in although the close sign was on. Lots of choices. Ive had the ribs, the sauce was really good although the meat was not fall off the bones. Ive had the candied yam as well but there was too much syrup. Personally, id go with a quarter of the syrup (and use real maple syrup), add cinnamon, nutmeg, cumin, and maybe burned marshmallows. Ive had the mac n cheese but there was too much pepper (although im a pepper guy) and id put a bit more salt instead. The corn bread was good. Good beers as well. Im being picky but i strongly recommend

Absolutely loved my visit to this soul food gem! The atmosphere was warm and inviting, making it the perfect place to unwind. The fried fish was simply delectable, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. And those southern sides? They hit the spot – the perfect comfort food. Can’t wait to come back for another taste of the South!

This place was everything the reviews stated it would be. Drove from Williamsburg and it was soooo worth it. Mr. and Mrs. Ray stopped by the table and were so friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. Staff was so welcoming and they even had a bar.❤️

Oh man I wish I knew about this place sooner. Literally the best soul food in the DMV. I got the chicken wings with sticky sauce, and the turkey collard greens and Mac and cheese as sides. The wings were TO DIE FOR. The flavor was out of this world, the crispiness just hit sooo so right, and the quality of the chicken was absolutely top notch. Plus the size of the wings is huge so you DEFINITELY get your moneys worth. I couldn’t even finish the wings that I got and I came in really hungry. The Mac was perfect, creamy and cheesy and delicious, and the collard greens were just so perfect and delicious. Also loved how they used turkey instead of bacon with the collards, huge plus there. Everything here is fantastic so no matter what you get, you can’t go wrong.
