It cost me $15 for a sesame chicken combination plate. It’s $16 for a single regular order of sesame chicken. The chicken is also dark meat so not very good quality. Also there’s nowhere to sit and no bathroom.

decent food but extremely rude on the phone. Wasn’t even done ordering yet and he said “that’s it, okay bye” and had a tone from the moment he answered the phone. **UPDATE- was even more rude when i picked up. i was honestly shocked by how poorly we were treated for no reason. literally yelled at my boyfriend to put his card in the machine. i was disgusted. please avoid here at all costs. there’s a million other places much better.**

The food here tastes like a very depressed person made it. In technique they make some of the best food on the island, but I can tell certain things are premade when they shouldn’t, that the vegetables have probably went through multiple defrosts, and that little care goes into selecting ingredients. For example I got the boneless ribs and it was literally 95% fat. I poured out liquid fat from 50% of the container and the pieces were all fat. It was like the equivalent of four sticks of butter of pure fat. I paid $10 for that.

I have been staying with in-laws in Stony Brook for the last few months because of the pandemic, and have frequented Kai Li multiple times. From the outside it is unassuming with a slightly outdated facade. Don’t let this confuse or deter you, because their food is wonderful. We have eaten many of their dishes including sesame chicken, beef and broccoli, as well as a variety of noodle dishes, soups (egg drop soup is really good), and appetizers. All are flavorful and cooked to order, making it fresh and enjoyable to go back each time. The owners, Gina and Steve, are incredibly friendly and remember who I am, as well as their daughter who works the registers, is really nice and professional at the register. Kai Li is both a great value price-wise and a great take on a local Chinese cuisine, and I would highly recommend this take-out restaurant to anyone in the Stony Brook and Port Jefferson area.
