What originally opened as Sakedokoro Makoto in 1994 by Chef Yoshiaki Itoh and later taken over by his son, Gene Itoh, is now being resurrected by the late chef’s colleague, Chef Minoru Ogawa as Kappo DC. Kappo DC is a 21-seat restaurant showcasing a ever-changing eight course tasting menu. As with Kaiseki or Izakaya styles of Japanese cuisine, Kappo is a multi-course meal left entirely up to the chef. With Kappo literally meaning “to cut and cook” and Makoto meaning “harmony” that is exactly what you’ll find behind Chef Ogawa’s counter.

When I say I have no words, I quite literally mean it. This was by far the most amazing meal I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing. I want to say every course was better then the last, but the quality of everything was so high, it’s hard to choose which was the best. The chefs were so polite and asked lots of question (and answered them as well). Corey behind the bar served AMAZING drinks. This is a life changing meal and you need to experience it first hand.

Fantastic experience. Attentive staff, and very involved owner. This Waygu focused omakase experience was a first for me. As an LA native, I have a hard time finding Japanese food in DC that stands up to the quality I grew up with. Except for Kappo Makoto and Zeppelin! Fantastic job sourcing quality ingredients prepared by a knowledgable and qualified team.

Indulging at this restaurant was an unparalleled experience. Kai’s impeccable service led us through an evening of luxury, effortlessly recommending drinks that perfectly accompanied our meal. Chef Tim’s culinary expertise shone brightly, with each dish a masterpiece of flavor. What truly set this establishment apart was Chef Tim’s personal interaction, as he passionately walked us through his creations. This restaurant transcends the ordinary, blending flawless service, exceptional cuisine, and a genuine connection with the chef. A heartfelt thanks to Kai and Chef Tim for crafting an unforgettable, personalized dining journey that will linger in our memories. An unequivocal five-star gem.

I just visited Kappo last night and this is definitely going to be my new favorite special occasion restaurant. We left happy and very full. Chef Ogawa and his team prepared delicious, creative, and beautiful plates and created a very warm atmosphere. I love fine dining but hate the stuffiness that often comes with it. Kappo is the exception. The staff were welcoming and fun, and they seemed to appreciate any question we had no matter how silly or amateur we might have felt it was. This is a place to not only taste but also learn about Japanese cuisine. Also, I love that they serve everyone at the same time. You feel like you’re enjoying the experience with a group and if I missed some detail about the dish, I could usually hear it repeated just a few seconds later. 🙂 I definitely recommend sitting at the counter so you can watch the preparation up close and talk to all the staff. Thank you to Chef Ogawa and the amazing team at Kappo! I’m so excited to return and become a regular.
