Kappo (かっぽう / 割烹) means cooking food with knives and fire.
In simple Japanese terms, かっ / 割 means cutting, chopping and cooking food with knife, and so on. And ぽう / 烹 means boiling, cooking food with fire.
So the combination of these two Japanese characters are a different expression of cooking with a knife and fire.
Kappo is a dish that is improvised by the customer’s order and can be enjoyed at the counter or at the table just in front of the kitchen without much formality.
From now on, Kappo will be held in Miyabi restaurant, Santa Monica.
So, we often refer to Japan’s dictionary as an instant gourmet dish that can be easily explained in a short explanation.

Nice place with high quality fish. A little pricey but it’s Santa Monica so pretty typical. We didn’t have reservation so we had to sit at the bar which was fine. It’s a little annoying that their machine at the bar beeps every few minutes when they get an order, customers shouldn’t have to hear the beeping sound! Otherwise it was a good meal. Also it was really cold inside, the customers next to us asked them to reduce their AC. Dress warm if you eat here.

I recently dined at a Kappo Miyabi that served an incredible beef sukiyaki. The flavors were outstanding, with tender beef, flavorful vegetables, and a rich broth. The waiter provided excellent service, being polite and attentive throughout the meal. The atmosphere of the restaurant was spectacular, with tasteful decor and a relaxing ambiance. Overall, it was a memorable dining experience that I highly recommend for anyone seeking delicious food, attentive service, and a beautiful atmosphere.

I recently visited this sushi restaurant and I must say, it was an exceptional experience. The ambiance was relaxing and inviting, and the staff were friendly and attentive. The sushi was beautifully presented and tasted fresh and delicious. Each piece was a work of art, with a unique combination of flavors and textures. The menu had a great variety of options, including vegetarian and gluten-free choices. Overall, I highly recommend this sushi restaurant to anyone looking for an unforgettable dining experience.

You know that a Japanese restaurant is legit with the majority of the guests is Japanese. ✨ First time here and I have to say I’m impressed! One of the freshest sashimis I’ve had. We try:

The sushi was extremely overpriced. The rice was overcooked (huge red flag) and the fish cutting wasn’t right.

Visiting from Hawaii this is my favorite spot so far one of the best sushi I have had yet! Server’s are very nice and accommodating with fast service. Many tables available indoor and outdoor. Great environment and everything we ordered was very tasty! I will return here for sure and recommend this spot to anyone in the area looking for a very good Japanese restaurant with amazing sushi and many other food options as well. Perfect for family and friends!

Update: I went back to give it another try last month and it was a much better experience than back in February. We went on Friday at around 7:30 pm and didn’t expect much besides seated indoors since it was super chilly outside. We were greeted into the tatami room and I believe it was because there were not that many customers at this time. We ordered our usual especially their Wagyu crispy rice and everything was superb. This time, the servers and waitress were attentive and didn’t mess up our orders. I thoroughly enjoyed this recent visit. It was a complete 360 turn from the last visit and I realized I needed to update this review.

The wagyu beef pot is just regular beef. This looks nothing like in the other reviews and they charge $90 for this pot. The salmon in the grilled rice pot is also stink (forgot to take a picture), and I saw they prepared it in the kitchen – the fish was dark brown. $150 for something like this is very disappointing. Christmas is not the reason for bad food. I can vouch for my words here and hope to warn people who would get treated like this.
