We bought vishu sadya take out from Karikku cafe on April 15th 2023. Initially we were a bit skeptical as this place didn’t have any photos or reviews online but we finally decided to give them a try. And we’re super glad we did that.

It was Friday evening and I thought about getting takeout from this place as I recently heard about them. It’s a nice cozy place, to sit and eat as well. We ordered food online and went to pick it up. Their service is great and the food tastes delicious. We ordered Kerala parotta, Appam, Beef curry, Beef peralan, Thalaserri chicken biriyani, gulab jamun and ada prathaman payasam. Everything reminded me of Kerala. Soon Onam festival is coming and we already have a plan to order the sadya from this place. I will definitely recommend this place.

Ordered porotta beef roast from the lunch menu on a Thursday. Porotta was fine, but the beef roast was an abomination. Beef itself was tough and that was simply mixed in with some masala that was red and sweet – tasted like paneer tikka masala.

This restaurant is neat and clean. Items are reasonably priced. They have enough car parking as well.

I don’t review restaurants much but feel compelled to review this one. We are yet to find a decent Kerala restaurant in the Bay Area and have been burnt before, but seeing that Karikku Cafe had 4.6/5 stars on Google, we decided to give it a try.

If you are looking for authentic kerala food…look no further. You will love the tastes and the variety this restaurant offers. I live in Sacramento and recently moved from NY and I had this craving for beef and porotta. Looked up this restaurant which was suggested to me by some friends. And I wasn’t disappointed. Had my craving satisfied. Also tried out their biryani and onam sadhya and felt right at home. Will visit again even though it is a little far off some Sacramento, well worth the miles!

Our new favorite for good mallu food! Authentic taste, quality ingredients, and a friendly proprietor/chef. Parottas are as fresh, light, and flaky as can be, the beef fry (not roast) hits it out of the park, and we enjoyed the whole fried fish (pompano) eaten at the restaurant. Thallassery biriyani was good too but the meat needed to be done a bit more, the chef (open to feedback) explained he was using a new cooker. So all in all, teething troubles aside, this place is definitely a win for us. We’ll be back to try more dishes.

I’m not familiar with kerala cuisine so I can’t say whether or not the thalassery biryani we got was an authentic representation of kerala cuisine. However, it did remind me of a watered down version of what people from Karnataka or Andhra Pradesh might consider to be chicken pulao. I don’t want to say it tasted bad, but I can’t say it tasted good either. The rice had the look and feel of having been simmered in a chicken or vegetable broth, and this felt like a way to shorten or cheapen the biryani making process. I know this as I had made rice with vegetable stock at home fairly recently and the color and taste of the grains of rice were almost identical to the rice used in the thalassery biryani. Additionally, the chicken just seemed to be added to the biryani as an afterthought and didn’t have any of the spices it was advertised to have. The bigger issue I had was the portion size. For $14, you’re getting an outrageously small portion of biryani with only three bony chicken pieces. Compare this to Bhimavaram Ruchulu in Fremont or Aha Restaurant in Milpitas which serve literally double the portion for the same price or a dollar more, along with much more pieces of meat. If you’re looking for a rich, flavorful, and filling biryani, this isn’t the place for you. I think it is oriented more toward those who grew up around kerala cuisine and have a stronger appreciation for it, or for non Indians who are just looking to sample some kind of Indian food. The small portion is the main reason we won’t be returning to this restaurant, tastes are a matter of preference.
