I visited Maldaner’s for lunch twice during a recent trip to Illinois, and had terrific food both times. The service was helpful, professional and attentive. My sister told me to try the horseshoe sandwich, which originated in the area. It was humongous (even the smaller version, “ponyshoe” was huge), but delicious. The vegetarian version had loads of fresh, grilled veggies, topped with welsh rarebit, topped with several inches of French fries. The second time, I wisely ordered the Vegetable Stir Fry with green tea rice as recommended by my server. It was absolutely delicious. There were also several other tempting vegetarian options.

Fine dining. Good service. Prices are reasonable for what you get. The chef/owner gets produce from the Farmer’s Market which makes the dishes exceptional. I highly recommend it. It is a Springfield historical establishment.

We had the nicest luncheon yesterday upstairs. Jesse and Danni took wonderful care of us and were each so very pleasant. I had the Korean Fried Chicken sandwich OMG it was superb! All of our group was very pleased. Thanks so much!

Tonight wasn’t it for Maldaner’s. The Beef Wellington was soggy, Their potato’s tasted like they were instant, and the vegetables were overcooked. On the other hand, My husband had the prime rib, and that was well done. However, his potatoes and veggies suffered the same fate. Disappointing to say the least.

For our one special evening while visiting Springfield, IL, we chose Maldaner’s for our meal. In fairness, the prices were a bit high for the area and that may have to do more with their history than their food or service.

I just had dinner at Maldaner’s this evening while in Springfield visiting from out of town. The reviews and website were all very promising, however the actual experience did not come close to the fine dining experience promised. Our server was unable to get the drink orders correct and later became very unpleasant after some complaints about the quality of the food. I was served beef Wellington (the house speciality per the menu) in which the beef was not rested and overcooked, the pastry crust was wet and gummy, and the vegetable and mashed potatoes tasted as if they had no seasoning whatsoever. I was actually told by the manager that “we don’t season our mashed potatoes.” (!) I ate maybe 3 bites of this dish and when our server finally came by at least 10-15 minutes later, I told her of the poor quality and asked that it be taken back. I did not want another dish as the rest of the party was nearly done by this point. When the check came, $15 of the $45+ had been subtracted from the bill. I asked the server to do something more given that I barely ate any of it and the quality was so poor; she brusquely told me the manager would have to take care of it. The manager was very short with our table in handling and grudgingly agreed to remove the full price of the dish. Overall it seemed as though the staff did not care at all that someone had such an unpleasant experience in their restaurant, and I would encourage anyone in search of a good meal in Springfield to look elsewhere.

I’m not from Springfield, so it has been years since I’ve eaten here. The atmosphere hasn’t changed- still class! The food is still fantastic (outstanding Onion Soup and tasty Beef Wellington). And the service is great- formal and friendly. Springfield should be proud.

This is one of the best restaurants in Springfield, and its chef, Michael Higgins, is a local celebrity and a well-known figure. He is also an environmentalist in the community, and everyone need to be familiar with him. Not to add, take pleasure in both his cooking and his companionship.
