Born and raised in Ridgeland, SC and now residing in Bluffton, Joy Mitchell has always been a daughter of the Low Country. Her journey began long before she would even realize it while at the side of her mother, Ann Mitchell affectionally known by all as “Mama Ann”. She taught her all of her unique cooking techniques and recipes. During the Covid pandemic, as businesses and restaurants shuttered, friends and family began asking Joy to cook them some of their favorite meals. Inspired by this and the memory of “Mama Ann”, “Mama Joy” and Mama Joy’s Kitchen were born with the sole purpose of providing friends, family and strangers alike a taste of what “Mama Ann” provided to so many for so long, food for the soul.

Me and my family ordered delivery to our resort for dinner while we was visiting Hilton Head from WV. The menu wouldn’t let us select the sides for the fried chicken plate due to a glitch. The owner/cook herself called me from her personal cell phone and apologized and refunded for the sides and didn’t charge me for the inconvenience, which wasn’t a big deal in the first place. She was extremely nice !!!! I had the meatloaf plate with mashed potatoes and Mac n cheese, my sister had the fried chicken with the greens (which was seasoned perfectly to a t), and Mac n cheese, and my brother in law got the fried fish sandwich and Mac n cheese. You can definitely tell TLC went into this food, I have no complaints what so ever, every single thing was delicious. And also forgot to mention the cornbread we got was absolutely the best I’ve ever had. I could go on and on about this food. I’ll just put it this way, the food was so delicious I called the owner back and told her just how good it was and she was just the sweetest most grateful person. Definitely will be eating here multiple times before heading back home.

Found this place by chance was not disappointed. Our hostess was very nice and we had a great meal. We also met Mama Joy herself and that sealed it for us. We will be back a few times before we leave. Ox tails were absolutely delicious.

Hidden gem!! Was visiting from Virginia and googled great places to eat, specifically southern cooking. You will not be disappointed. Food was delicious!! Friendly staff and atmosphere. Owner was very personal and friendly. Did I say food was delicious?!? GO!!! Don’t think about it…. GOOOOI!!!

I ordered oxtails and deviled eggs. The food was delicious like I cooked it myself. The only drawbacks was that I was ignored by the bar tender for a good 5 minutes and the sign on the building is kind of confusing. I would like to come back again when I am in the area.

Had a Spectacular meal there with friends. Hard to find but well worth finding it! I had the Blackened Shrimp, wife had the Meatloaf Sandwich and Collard Greens. Food was absolutely wonderful and Mama Joy was a delight to meet! Don’t miss going there while on the island!
