This place is definitely a diamond in the rough! The food is homemade and delicious at a reasonable price. There are several vegetarian options, which is extremely rare in Dubuque. It’s kinda like stepping back in time in their establishment. Great food, kind attentive staff, and very reasonable prices.

This has become my go to place here in Dubuque Iowa. From the family friendly atmosphere and all the wonderful employees to the best family owned Italian restaurant I have ever had the privilege of dining in, and trust me, I have had more than my fair share of Italian food. From my home state of Tennessee and my second home state of Georgia, to my new home state of almost 5 years now of Iowa. Plus all the other many places I have been. I could go on and on about all the wonderful dishes, homemade soups, homemade desserts, the pasta and pizza , you get the point. But of course my favorite bartender Ms. Bobbie who seems to know everyone in town. My favorite homemade clam chowder ( New England or manhattan) on Fridays. You have to stop by , sit at the bar and say Scott and Michelle recommend this place. I hope you enjoy as I always do!!!

My wife and I were in the area for the week and this is the best food we had the entire time. If you have never had the Panzerotti this is their specialty and I highly recommend it. Good food and drinks, and the family that runs the joint are good people. Very authentic in all regards including the hospitality!

Fantastic!! The pizza bread is sinfully delicious! If we ever get back here, we will be eating here again. It looks a bit iffy on the outside, but it is quaint and clean on the inside. We loved it! Some people said the marinara sauce was too watery, but it had a lot of flavor. I usually skip over it because it is too sweet like lots of sugar has been added, but this I ate and liked! This restaurant is HIGHLY recommended! They gave us excellent service as well, they got very busy while we were deciding what to order, but it was no problem.

The place looks like a hole in the wall, but the food and service are anything but. I loved the story on the menu. Service was fast and friendly, and I was astounded at how delicious the food was. I’m excited to visit again.

I had the very best experience here. The food is absolutely delicious. The prices are fair. The staff is top notch. The bartender made a point to compliment my makeup (I was done up for a show). I also loved meeting Lydia. She’s so welcoming, kind, and sweet that I know for sure I’ll be back any time I can. I play with the Dubuque Symphony, but I live in Cedar Rapids. I’m definitely coming back to Mario’s next season!

Finding good Italian food can be challenging, but finding it in America’s heartland is …well, unexpected, especially if the location is Dubuque, IA. Mario’s is a gem and the server Natasha, despite it being her first night, was on top of things with awesome service, seated right away, calamari was delicious, lasagna wonderful, sauce was a little watery and the wait for food a little long but honestly worth the wait, tried their clam chowder, turned out to be Manhattan style, tasted a little bland so not a fan of that, bread was fresh, cannolis were a nice treat to end the meal, bar and liquor available, parking on the streets surrounding the restaurant, easy to find on the corner, would definitely recommend and stop in again if passing through Dubuque.

What amazes me about the food here is how good the dough is. The calzone is perfected by excellent dough. When we drive through Dubuque, this is a planned stop.

Where do I start. This place is like sitting in your own (or maybe your Grandma’s) kitchen and dining room. The atmosphere remains very Italian and home-y. And the food is delish. I like to get the cheese bread, and any pasta, but I find I lean into the lasagne over and over. Shout out to Bartender Extraordinaire BOBBI.
