Mosley’s Barbecue and Provisions Menu – Iowa City, IA

Type : Barbecue restaurant

Location : Iowa City, IA

We care about your food, where it comes from, and how it’s prepared. All our meat is ethically raised and locally sourced from Heartland Fresh Family Farm in Donnellson, Iowa. Our hickory for the pit, our collard greens and other veggies come from Kroul Farms in Mt. Vernon, Iowa. Our Pit – the BMF 3078, weighing in at 4,000 lbs. – was custom built by Weirich Welding Plus in Lewis, Iowa. All our meat is barbecued the traditional way – low and slow over a hickory fire carefully tended by the pitmaster. The place had to be done right, and we think we got it. The chance to bring this food, drink, and dining experience to Iowa City brings us great joy – we hope it brings you a bit of joy, too!

My family and I stopped in here around 4:30 on a Saturday afternoon. With social distancing still in place, about half the tables inside and about 20% of the patio were full of guests. The atmosphere was kinda cool, a mix of rustic and industrial with a pleasant smokey scent as you entered and real hardwood stacked along the counter. We were greeted at the door and told to choose a seat. The crowd wasn’t rowdy by any means, but a bit loud even with an Iowa basketball game on the TV. Nothing unexpected for Iowa City on a Satuday afternoon in March. Unfortunately, the ambiance was really the only thing we cared for. Once seated, it took an extended period of time for our wait staff to take our order. Once they did, we recieved our kids drinks but not our draw beers. Our food arrived fairly promptly and when ask if we needed anything I responded, “We are still waiting on our beers” to which the waitress replied that the bartender was, “really busy”. We started to eat and, before we knew it we were finished with our food….still no drinks. The food was just okay. The “Mosley” pulled pork was cold and on a pretty generic bun and fairly unimpressive to look at. I think it would have been better had it not been room temp. The cornbread was nothing more than what you get in a box, just add milk and an egg.To be honest, the side of Mac and cheese was the best thing we ordered. Our beers finally arrived at the same time we asked for our check. Wait staff seemed overwhelmed for no busier than they were. Overall a kind of dull, slow and disappointing experience.

We had Mosley’s cater for our wedding and unfortunately it did not work out. They did not provide boats which we had discussed and had to eat off our heavy glass chargers. My wife approached them and said it was our wedding planner who said we would eat off them which after following up with her said never was communicated. Our final count we told them was 190 which ended up actually being 170 that came to the dinner. We ran out of food four tables short. We thought we would be taking left over home, not telling our guests to wait until the pizza delivery came. Additionally, when we did our taste test they quoted us a price and then a month before the wedding told us it would be more than the agreed upon price per plate because “inflation”. My wife reached out to them via email the week following our wedding kindly stating our concerns – and several of our wedding guests that night – and they took no accountability. It honestly was embarrassing for us – everyone at weddings remembers the food. While we love supporting small businesses, there our several bbq joints in the area and think other places would have been more accommodating.

The bowl of chili was dry and didn’t even have half a cup of actual soup. The sandwiches were mostly bun with a tiny amount of meat. Plus our order was 15 minutes late for pick up. Totally not worth the price or time. Jimmy Jacks Rib Shack is a significantly better in terms of food quality, customer service, and overall value.

Overpriced and a total letdown. Saturday, they were supposed to have brisket, but when I asked, they said they had none. It wasn’t like they were busy either. We ordered a Moscow mule….the barkeep made sure to emphasize the “Moscow” because it was STRAIGHT VODKA. Sandwiches were dry, and don’t get me started on the cornbread….like eating a handful of sand. The mac and cheese gets . For a place with such high ratings, I was surprised to have such a poor experience.

Some of the worst food I’ve had. Cornbread is cold. Brisket is almost all fat. Beans tasted microwaved. Coleslaw tasted old. Terrible food. Do not waste your money here. Only positive is the girl that served me was nice.

Great place. We recently moved from Seattle to Iowa City. Our favorite place. Great barbecue meat and drinks. One star for the owner who wants to close the place. So sad and disappointing. Just do something to keep this wonderful spot in Iowa City. Strain your brain cells. It is a great location and service and food, and if something is missing, put some thinking instead of sending us to North Liberty.

I’ve come to the sad realizeation that Iowa City does not understand BBQ. Mosley’s was average at best the night we went there. The selection is pretty slim, with only pulled pork, smoked chicken, and ribs. The staff is super friendly and witty. I did really appreciate that. The restaurant is really more of a bar, but it’s really clean and welcoming. I ordered the Moseley, but have to say the highlight of my meal was the corn bread, which was amongthe best I’ve ever had. Their bbq sauces are definitely different, but in a good way. I really enjoyed the hot sauce and gold sauce. The Mac n cheese was good but could have been better if the noodles were cooked longer. I know I’m being overly critical of the place, but I’ve spent less money for far better bbq in my day.
