Part of our food adventures begin with my family’s knack to find new places to eat. We were feeling seafood, and it came down to two places. They settled on Murphy’s. Not far from my son’s campus, we found our destination. The look of the building reminded me of restaurants from my neck of the woods. The atmosphere inside was nice.

This is the first time I have been here and WOW. We started with fried eggplant and it was awesome! Lightly fried and served nice and hot with a great marinara. I tried the shrimp and crab gumbo, nice dark roux with a kick of spice but nothing over powering.

Ordered a cup of shrimp/crab gumbo. After a bite, I could tell that something was off, but wasn’t sure if that’s how it was being that I have never eaten here before. After adding my own seasoning, I realized that it wasn’t the flavor causing the “off” taste because it didn’t go away. I opened the extra container of plain rice (included) to find BLUE grains sitting right on top. That is a telltale sign of bacteria, mold, contamination, etc. in rice. (Thankful that I opened the extra container of rice because I wouldn’t have been able to tell with the rice mixed in the gumbo due to the dark color).

We have passed by this restaurant for a while while my daughter attended Southeastern. Last night we finally decided to stop and eat. I’m so glad we did! The service is impeccable, the food amazing. We had Catfish Daniel. The serving is huge and delicious! The catfish fillets were perfectly cooked and the étouffée was some of the best I have had. The hush puppies to die for. We will be regulars from now on. I highly recommend this restaurant.

While I gave 5 stars for service and atmosphere but want to make this disclaimer. I was there for a company event with a group of about 20 guest of the sponsoring company. Which contributed to non standard (I’m guessing as it was my first time there), wait service and atmosphere and didn’t want to penalize the restaurant for the sponsoring company’s control over halting service during the presentation.

We just had an excellent experience at Murphy’s Seafood as we were passing through. The bartender/waitress was absolutely amazing. The salad bar was to die for. I could have only gotten the salad bar, and been completely satisfied. Our fried seafood platter consisted of oysters, catfish, a crab cake, hush puppies, and french fries with excellent, homemade tartar and cocktail sauces. Prices were reasonable. $20 for the entire seafood platter which we split and had plenty left over, and only $4 to add the all-you-can-eat salad bar to an entree. Very pleased with our experience at Murphy’s today.
