Papa Dave by far has the best BBQ in town and I would rank him up there with the top Alabama pit masters. Service is great and the entire staff is very friendly. We will definitely be back for more! We first found Papa Dave when he had his smoker at the four way down Section. Now that he has moved into his new location near Fish River we always have to stop on the way to the beach or for a big family supper. The smoker is huge and the wonderful smell of home made Barbecue permeates down the road making this spot easy to spot by smell alone. The lunch menu is great also with plenty space to bring even the biggest crew we never have to wait too long to get seated and they have excellent service from the moment you walk in. I’d recommend getting the nachos as an appetizer if you have a group, it can feed a horse. Every single thing I have tried has been great but I got a few more visits till I make my way threw the menu. Can’t wait to see what’s next for these guys!

First of, the original Papa Dave’s Barbecue only does take out, and is not a full restaurant like the one in Barnwell. The one on Section Street is not the one in Barnwell. The restaurant itself is just off the side of 98 squished near two pretty similar buildings, so it is really easy too miss, but hell if I miss that amazing place again!

Solid BBQ from a nice family business. I had the pulled pork, which is a good benchmark of how good you can BBQ. It was a 9/10 easy. I was also generously offered to sample the chicken and brisket, which were both very good. Their sauce is homemade and comes in regular or spicy.

Awesome food, awesome people! We ordered the nachos for a starter and could have stopped there, but I had the Po’ Boy (pork) and it was worth the calories! Wife had the meat sampler and it too was good. Having the meat naked really showcased the flavor. Kids liked their wraps as well and we all left stuffed with food left!

I experienced the worst BBQ chicken I’ve ever had. After reading all of the other reviews, today’s effort by the pit master must have been an outlier. The chicken was pulled and chopped….served in a pile like pulled pork. It was over salted, smelled and tasted like it was over smoked. It was uneatable. The sides were better, but just barely. I might give them another chance, but there are too many other great BBQ restaurants in the area (like Moe’s) to eat in this place again. Sorry Papa….but thanks for your Army service anyway.
