IR Fantastic
As a native of Gary Indiana, I used to thoroughly enjoy eating here throughout the years. After this last visit, I have come to the realization that those feelings will only come through nostalgia now. The prices are what they are, and of course I don’t mind paying for quality. But what they are now serving as shrimp is low quality at best. I ordered 2 pizza puffs and a pound of shrimp with mild on the side. Outside of the breading, the shrimp had zero flavor and was very tough. Reminded me of what happens when you deep fry Great Value “farm raised” shrimp. Pizza puffs still have the ability to satisfy a craving for juvenile favorites, but what used to be the maim attraction should be sent out to pasture. This one really hurt, but as they say, nothing stays the same.

Ray’s shrimp used to be the spot when coming back in town. However, it’s beyond ridiculous in my opinion for this location to not close until 10pm but magically tell customers 30 mins before “oh by the way we don’t have no shrimp but we got perch and other stuff”. I’ve never heard of a shrimp house that doesn’t have shrimp! Are you kidding me?! Ray’s Shrimp is one of a select few of food establishments our family looks forward to when coming back to the G. I think they just didn’t want to drop nothing since it’s close to closing time (another customer said the same thing and that they do this often). In all actuality, workers wanting to get off quicker isn’t my concern… keeping the same quality consistent service as the one that’s now closed should be pertinent to provide regardless of time. I’m so upset and struggling to give this a 3-star review since this is the first experience with this location and based off this foolery alone, this should be lower…. so this is me being nice and remembering the 20+ years of good family memories before coming to this location.

SAUCE PLEASE!!!! Could any one of you eat your food without it? Been in business too long for such a horribly packed, dry order.

I think I heard that Ray’s was under new management. The shrimp was chef’s kiss delicious as always. And the nice lady who worked in there was better than average. She was friendly and kind, it was very refreshing compared to interactions I’ve had when I’ve traveled home and visited in the past.

The food was horrible. Mushy rubbery shrimp. The perch was like frozen deep fried fish sticks. My first and last time there

Fell off bad!!! I could make better shrimp in my kitchen. I ordered shrimp and the shrimps were not sauced as requested. I don’t have a car so I’m forced to eat this mess!!

Regularly seeing people visit this restaurant sparked my interest in dining at Ray’s. As I entered, I asked customers how was the food. They commented positively on the food. The restaurant offers comforting sides to complement the fried seafood menu. We ordered shrimp and whiting. Ray’s fries reminded us of McDonald’s fries. The shrimp were perfectly cooked. However, both the shrimp and fish lacked flavor. Daily specials are inexpensive.

My husband is from Gary and everytime we are in town or a family member goes to Gary we send in an order for 2 lbs of shrimp with the sauce on the side. They travel all the way back to ATL pop em in the air fryer and add sauce and it was like we bought em and ate them while in the parking lots of rays.
