I went with my family yesterday, July 9, 2023. My first impression was the really nice decor. Well done! However, it was all downhill from there… We were seated right away but once seated no one came by to ask for our drink orders for approximately 20 minutes. Then we, again, waited for the waitress to take our food order. Let me be clear, it was not busy! The food was mediocre at best. First, the “salad” was literally left over lettuce with some chicken and a few olives piled high on a plate. The pizza was pretty small as well. The worst was yet to come… My son-in-law ordered the linguini and made it very clear that he could not have mushrooms. He told her multiple times and she assured him that there would be no mushrooms. He completely finished his plate and then a few minutes later he developed a horrible allergic reaction. He had nausea and a skin reaction. I informed the waitress, who apologized and left to serve other customers. She showed zero concern. This whole painful experience cost us over $100.00…..FOR LUNCH I do not recommend this restaurant at all.

I hadn’t been to Sammy’s in probably 6 years and was pleasantly surprised to see the La Mesa one had been expanded and remodeled. That was the last of the good news. The sign said wait to be seated. We arrived at 5:45 and were seated at 6:00, despite the place being less than half full. After perusing the menu and being a bit shocked at 5-star high prices for food and especially wine, I ordered a beer and the Tuscan pizza, my friend ordered the sliders which came with fries. At 6:25, the server brought just the fries. At 6:35 the server brought the two bite-size sliders. At 6:50 my pizza finally arrived. Please note it takes less than two minutes to cook a pizza in a wood-fired oven. Needless to say, we were unimpressed with the wait and the blandness of everything. By 7:10, the place was full. But that seems to be the formula for a successful restaurant in San Diego these days. Poor service, excessively high prices and small portions of bland and boring food.

I ordered Mushroom Orzitto which is the least expensive item and the only vegetarian option on the Pasta menu. The portion was smallish, especially considering the price, and there being no side dish included. And $4 for a soda (even with free refills) seems a bit high. Sure, the food is a step above Olive Garden, but I think I’ll take a step back until my income matches this expectation.

This was our first time dining at Sammys. I guess I had higher expectations. Food quality and taste was just okay. Pizza size was ridiculously small, and just not that good. I was surprised how overpriced it was. $20 for amounted to a personal size pizza.

Celebrating our friends wedding! Our server was Robert B and he did a fantastic job. Being in the industry I really pay attention to detail and he was on point. Thank you for making our experience amazing and I surely hope to have him next time we dine in.
